Move/live anywhere where would it be? Things to consider, personally... -good deer, turkey and possibly duck hunting. (Heavy on the deer) -price of land -cost of living -mineral rights??? (Never dealt with this) Where and why?
Northern Wisconsin. Maybe Tomahawk area. Maybe Peshtigo area. I'd have think about it longer to finally decide where. Love the lifestyle, the northwoods, the people (for the most part). The weather would suck for part of the year but if I lived on my hunting land time would not be a factor like it is now.
Where ever all of these guys on here are buying ground at $1k/acre. I could have my own little farm at those prices:D In all seriousness, deer hunting wouldn't be my #1 priority in moving. Western NC would be at the top for the following positives: Cost of living Proximity to the OBX (wife loves the beach) Still in the mountains More mild winters Good trout waters (much like here) Idaho/Montana would be next for: Scenery Outdoor Recreational Opportunities (kayaking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, photography, camping, etc.) Don't require large parcels of private land (public land offerings are more numerous than back east). If public land isn't appealing, I have a lot of family/friends in this area to help me out Job market for teachers is a bit better than the SE In all honesty, that's about it. Everywhere is full of compromises I suppose, and that's not what this thread is about, but my wife and I live in one of the better areas for both of us at this time in our lives. Teacher's in PA do well compared to most states, so that has a HUGE bearing on where we live. My wife has a great job with an awesome company that is only in the mid-Atlantic, and with the perks of her job, it wouldn't make sense to change at this stage. We have good hunting (on private ground), cost of living WAS reasonable, and mineral rights...well that's a whole other topic (literally...it is, I posted about it in the main forum :D ). All in all, PA is pretty good. Now, when we retire, I will be heading to coastal SC most likely. For a few months of the year that is.
Colorado! Every kind of hunting I want. Close to family. The best hiking and mountain biking trails. Awesome weather yeqr around (if you like dry cold). Hopefully by next Christmas we will be there an settled in. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
Honestly I don't think I can pick the "perfect" place. I'm sick and tires of cold winters, so it would have to be in the south. I don't like crowded areas, so the south east or any coastal areas are out. I guess maybe Texas, New Mexico, Arizona or Southern Utah. Maybe one of these days we'll move south, but I won't be selling my place here in Missouri. I guess I can summer here and winter down there.
I must be happy where I'm at since I haven't left But, for those who wish they were living somewhere else....what's stopping you?
Anchorage, AK by a landslide. I'll be applying for jobs there this winter, and if I don't end up there it will likely be New Mexico, Montana, or South Dakota as the back up locations.
I couldn't handle the daylight situation in AK. Hats off to you, Trevor :D My wife was offered a few pharmacy jobs up there when she graduated. They dangle an awfully nice carrot in front of you (at least they did).
Wanna go back home to cool weather, lotsa game lands, crazy good fly fishing...daughter is still in High School....
I'm perfectly happy with where I am at right now in central Minnesota. Plan to live close to where I grew up my entire life.
I currently live in Fargo for college, but my "home" is in Alexandria MN. I love it there. Fishing Deer Hunting Waterfowl, Turkey (although I don't hunt Turkeys), Pheasant hunting, good winters, and good summers. (lots of snow in the winter, and lots of sun in the summer) If I was going to move there are things i would like though. Wyoming because of the mountains and the Elk hunting and Mule deer possibly, and becusae i cant deal with the democrats in Co. Wisconsin because of the epic deer hunting and closer than WY to family in MN Possibly Alaska because who doesn't like Alaska? But in reality I would love to live in Alexandria for my whole life and keep adding acres to the family land
Pharmacists work long shifts in 90% of jobs available. 10 or 12 hour shifts are the norm. I'd be at work before the sun comes up and not get off until after it already went down whether I lived in Anchorage, Alaska or Nashville, TN. I'm much more concerned about not being able to deal with the cold weather than the daylight hours during the winter. Remember you get the bonus of enjoying the flip side of that during the summer when the weather is nice enough to do enjoyable things outdoors anyway. Last August when I flew up, we left my friend's house at 9 PM to go hike up "Flattop Mountain". Hiked to the peak and got back to his house by 11 pm... and it was just getting dark enough to need your headlights. But as for carrots, there are definitely job opps that pay much more than the lower 48... but Anchorage for the most part isn't included. You'd do better than the national average in Anchorage, but pretty comparable to most lower 48 settings. I'll hopefully be going USPHS route which is military scaled pay anyway, so I won't get to partake in the higher checks regardless haha
I'm surprised at the number of people that are saying AK. I think if money wasn't any concern I would spend my summers in ND and winter in LA.
Pretty good answers so far, keep them coming. Alaska as well as anything out west definitely is some beautiful county, just not sure i could live there. My thoughts right now are land/deer/managing land for deer/working land for enjoyment. That is right at financially impossible here with land prices, not to mention the deer suck. I'd rather visit here a week or so a year, and live where I hunt versus the visa versa scenario which is what happens now.
I would consider Kentucky. They have good deer and turkey as well as nice landscape. I really don't know how much land costs there but the cost of living should be fairly low.
