How do you feel about it no longer being taught in schol.

My son is 15 and was never taught how. I understand it is not needed as much today but when I think about him not being able to read the declaration of independence, it bothers me.

I think I will teach him myself

I think it should be taught. Honestly can't write it myself but can read it just fine.

I think they should stop teaching literacy period...who needs it?

 JK, It's unbelievable how the school system is screwed up, they probably stopped teaching cursive writing because too many of the young teachers out of college are too illiterate to use or teach it. People should pull their kids out of public schools anyway.

    Yeah,
I agree that it is needed and good to know how to put pen to paper as well as read this form of writing. The power may be down sometime.

I'm kind of indifferent to it. It is a dying form of literacy. I was one of the last few classes actually taught it, and other than signing my name on checks I literally have never used it one time.

My gripe is the no "common sense" classes in high school/college. They need a class that teaches you the little things of being adults like how taxes work, how to apply for a mortgage, how to be smart buying a car, the different routes of saving for retirement, etc... SO many people get specialized degrees with their parents help the whole way and eventually get out clueless. They are a genius and an idiot at the same time.

I've noticed this with my class especially (may skew the results a bit since I go to a private baptist college and the average family income is extremely high... it seems from the outside looking in lol). So many 25 year olds that still have their parents filing their W-2s for them, paying their car insurance/rent, basically any common sense real life decision is handled by their father. We all earn doctorates in a year and many will not have the slightest clue how to move on into the real world. It's kind of sad really.

Very well stated. I feel fortunate that my parents cut off all of my "allowances" at the age of 14. I got a job every summer, did my own taxes sans CPA, and bought everything I wanted. To toot my own horn, it's amazing to see where my classmates are at compared to my wife and I at the moment.

It was still taught when I was in school but they taught it in 2nd grade. I barely remember anything from school from that far back. I can read cursive writing and sign my name in it but other than that I have never used it.

I also agree about putting more common sense classes in. I had a couple in high school but non that really helped me out. My dad helped explain most of those things to me, but if it wasn't for him id probably be lost and confused. For reference, I'm 20.

Thread about cursive writing and we're getting into allowances, jobs, taxes, and tooting ones horn. Definitely the off season!

It's a dying form of literacy. The ONLY time I have ever used it is with signing my name. I feel they should at least teach them how to do that... Otherwise it is a waste of time in my eyes.

I only use it to write checks and I have noticed that mine is barely legible now.

Same with me. I don't know if anyone other than me can tell what my name is when I sign it.

I can still read and write cursive but never use it unless I'm signing my name and even then it's just a scribble. My first thought was why do we need it, however I do like the idea of being able to read the original Declaration of Independence. That should never be lost.

    THIS!

I was taught it and haven't used it in so long I'm not even sure I could write a full paragraph.

Good. It is useless. I never used cursive after grade school, and I know zero adults that write in cursive.

Did you notice the part where I quoted TEmbry and was responding to his post?

    Good job d-bag.

On the cursive note, drop it.

Settle down big shooter - Wasn't hating at all, simply stating it's the off season and people get off track.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings and I hope you can forgive me.

I can't imagine printing your name on a check or writing a letter without using cursive. I think every person should know how.
Sad state of our public education system. IMO

I even learned short hand in high school but never used it.

I guess things like a thank you note written in script....a card or a short letter....all useless...typical of today's lack of tact and class. Plenty of examples where script is not only convenient but is more appropriate.

So thankful I was provided a private education. And even more thankful I have the means to provide a private education for my children.

I have been a teacher for 19 years, both high school math and elementary generalist. I teach it and expect them to read mine. I don't expect them to use it, but many have chosen to.

Why we continue to set the bar so low is beyond me. It's one of the reasons that this is my last year teaching. IT, here I come!
