Obviously the "War on Drugs" is not working, and since we have a real world example of decriminalizing all drugs working in Portugal, it should be time for the US to follow. Agree or disagree?
Disagree. Would not want my (future) kids growing up in a society where that sort of activity is "legal".
Ha, I'm just pulling a Hooker. Adding nothing to the argument, just telling people their thoughts are not valid.
I'm not upset. Just pointing out that you tend to do that alot. You discount other peoples opinions, but hardly ever give yours.
The "War on Drugs" point of the thread is off base. Portugal features legal limits and protects the junkies. If you are caught with more than the legal limit, your *** is in trouble. The "War on Drugs" still exists.
Fine. But they use a completely different approach than the US. They allow possession of certain amounts, if you are caught with more, instead of locking them up in prison, they use treatment for drug abuse. Their "war" seems to be working more than ours. And I am not saying that Portugal's way is the end all, be all method.
Pot sure... Should have been legal decades ago. But anyone who has had a family member go through addiction and rehab with some of the harder drugs knows first hand how easily and quickly it ruins lives. I'd move to Western Canada if America became a place where it was legal to use meth, heroin, crack, take your pick... Legalizing it gives young minds the impression that's its ok to use it (why so many youth quickly jump to using tobacco and alcohol).
If we wanted an almost 16% unemployment rate like Portugal it would be a fantastic idea. We could quickly be a nearly third world country just like them!
I am for decriminalizing lots of things IF our country would become more Libertarian and people understood the government is not coming to help you if you get addicted and find yourself strung out. That being said there a lot of drugs that need to still illegal and never allowed.
I dont want to pay for any of their treatment and I dont think it is selfish to say that. We need less government and more personal accountability which includes a person fostering strong family and community roots so when times are tough they have a support network. I am sick of paying for peoples crap.
