I'm tired of spending the $130/month on something I rarely watch anymore. If it wasn't for sports, I would have canceled a long time ago, but I'm starting to be bored by sports a bit. I usually fall asleep during the games now anyways So with Netflix, Hulu, and an HD antenna, I should be able to get most everything, right? That would be less than $20/month, and I would just be missing ESPN sports and HBO, but I can always download the HBO shows. Anybody else dropped their cable/satellite?
No. I did drop the movie channels and saved about 40 bucks a month a long time ago. Today, I will be replacing my DirectTV, Hughesnet and Local Telephone service with our new Rural Fiber Optic service. 30mb download, 15 mb upload, TV, and unlimited phone service. This will upgrade my services, but actually save me about $100 a month.
I've been wanting to do it for awhile, but couldn't give up my sports, but now I'm not even watching sports that much anymore, so...
I have not had cable/ satellite in a least 5 years. Aside from very few shows I don't miss it or the bill ,not much of a sports guy anymore. I look at it this way the time I spent watching all that garbage is put other places, a lot of it is on the reloading bench but hey its something.
There's no TV signal here, so Just online streaming. I looked at both Roku & AppleTV. I was planning to get an iPhone so I went with the AppleTV. The other boxes work great too, but if you have iAnything or a mac, I'd get the Apple.
We have iPhones, an iPad, and an iMac. What would Apple TV allow me to do that my smart TV doesn't already do?

The problem I have is my internet is cable driven....if that wasn't the case I would have dumped cable long ago. I do the next best thing....write a good percentage of it off as a business expense.
I dropped mine 2 years ago and don't miss it one bit. There is a website you can pay a small fee to watch sport channels, I have to find out from my accountant what site it is, he has it not me.
I currently have DTV but that was due to football and Game of Thrones (yup, I'm a geek.) now that football's over (and I can no longer stomach today's NFL) I'll be "off the grid" again soon. I have ROKU and really like it. My wife probably watches even more ROKU than I do- she does a lot of the fitness channels, we both watch it for amazontv (have Amazon Prime) and and I like it for all the hunting/outdoor channels. AppleTV probably does most if not all that Roku does, but I've never looked into it as I'm not a huge Apple device fan.
Not sure what all your Smart TV has, but apple has the a ton of apps (Netflix, Hulu, PBS, iTunes for buying & renting movies, iTunes Radio, you can also access your MLB & NHL subscriptions) It is also hooked up to your iCloud account, so your photos are accessible. You can stream from any device to the TV, photos & videos. With newer iMacs, iPhone & iPads your can turn on video mirroring and mirror right to the TV. I really like playing my music from my phone through my theatre system.
There's a ton more apps I didn't list. I honestly don't use many, but there's a couple disney ones for your little one
The quality isn't the best, at times, but there are sites out there where you can watch games for free. I'm sure it isn't the most legal means, but it beats not being able to see your favorite team.

I recently got cable TV as it was cheaper to get TV and cable internet together than just internet alone. Now that the six months has passed, I'm going to drop Cable TV and keep the internet once Supercross season is done. My previous setup was thus: HD antenna (RCA, model# ANT1251 bought for about $20+tax) Netflix Blue-ray player 700+ movies However, since going through a divorce, I "lost" about half the movies as the ex took them. Which was fine, because many of them were not watched more than once. The rest, I wound up going through and donating well over 100 of them to Goodwill. I'll probably go through the rest of them before too long and donate more since I hardly watch movies anymore. Once Supercross season is over with, I'm going back to antennae TV with a similar setup. However, I'm dropping Netflix and going with Amazon Prime. Much better deal. It's about $80/year for very similar content, and you get free two day shipping included with it. I've also seen Google recently advertising their similar product, but know nothing about it at this time. The antenna I have works great for me as I live in a suburban area in close proximity (~15 miles) to signal towers. If you live further out, you'll need a bigger antenna.
