What's your budget/timeframe? Is this for a specific project or just general use?

windows, and just for general use I don't want to spend a fortune on it I am not really sure what some good editing software will cost. How much would some of the mid range software cost? Me and my buddy that hunt together all the time started filming a bit last year and I have footage I would really like to edit together from last year and this year we are trying to get more involved with filming and have a good end product to put out there for people to enjoy on youtube and on the site here if we can for all the guys on the forum to watch.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio is fairly decent and in your range. On top of that there are lots of Youtube videos on how to use it.

I'd go with HITfilm. It's far more user friendly than Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier and you can do amazing stuff with it. Plus they have awesome user support and the tutorials assume you have no video editing knowledge.

If you really want to learn video editing, you could go with Adobe Creative Cloud, it's $50 a month and you can sign up and only pay for the months you use it. It's what my production company uses and we love it, but the learning curve is steep.

Bringing this thread back to life. I have been using Cyberlink Power Director 11 with pretty good results. Bought my new camera, only to realize it Power Director 11 doesn't support XAVC format. If I upgrade to 13, supposedly it does, but I think I'm going a different route. I think I'm going to subscribe to Premier Pro. I already subscribe to Photoshop and light room, so I suppose it would be nice to have all those programs working on harmony. I went ahead and downloaded the trial version, which doesn't seem to have any limitations, and I was able to put together a decent video without too much trouble. I only did really, really basic stuff, but curious to see how other users like PP compared to other professional programs.

Here's the video I put together, it's just sort of some test footage from my new camera. By the way, Youtube compression really sucks. When I play this Youtube clip compared to the original clip, it's a night and day difference in the quality.

I downloaded the trial version of Adobe and man does this thing have a learning curve. Going to take me forever to figure out how to use it. Think while I am learning I will also just use Windows Live Movie Maker so I can keep posting videos for now.

I've been watching youtube tutorials, and in actuality it seems fairly simple. It is just really intimidating looking, not knowing what everything is called and how it is used. Once I watch a tutorial, it seems pretty easy.

We've been using Corel video studio for the past five years. It's a upgrade from windows movie maker but still plenty easy to use. If we ever get serious into it we will probably go with sony.

I'll second Premiere Pro. Granted, I also subscribe to the Creative Cloud so I have access to it all. I've been using Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver (Flash back in the day as well) for 11 years, so the transition to Premiere Pro (have been using it since version 7, but not regularly like I do with the other apps) was easy. It looks intimidating, but to put together basic clips with some basic transitions is SUPER easy.

Skywalker, try Vimeo out. Their compression is much more forgiving, and the site itself is oriented more around professionals (which I'm not :D ).

Have to second the Sony stuff.
There is so much in the way of tutorials on Youtube on it's use it's crazy.
It's render times are usually faster than the Adobe products.
If you buy the lower end software you can always upgrade as you grow.
The upgrades, if you watch out for them, are really reasonable as well.

The funny part is that right now, Sony Vegas can't work with the XAVC-L codec that my new Sony camera uses.

I'm sure they will get on that one pretty fast.
If not it would be a rather stupid move.

Just downloaded the Adobe trial too. Took forever for some reason. Did you haveta download the creative cloud too or did you just get the premier program.
