So I've had a subscription to Premier Pro CC for the last couple years, but I honestly don't use it enough to justify the costs. I've just been biting the bullet and paying the subscription but I ran across DaVinci Resolve 12.5 from Black Magic Design the other day. It sells for $995 or they have a completely free version that does 99% of what the paid version does. I downloaded it and gave it a whirl and decided right away that I'll be cancelling the Premier Pro subscription and working with this from now on. It's not some junk freeware software, it's legit professional software that's used by they big boys. I have no idea why it's free unless they are just trying to grow the user base, but you can't beat free in my opinion. You might want to give it a look. Blackmagic Design: DaVinci Resolve 12
Yep, DaVinci is a great platform. I would consider a switch from Adobe, but I use a lot of products in their suite, so the subscription is worth it to me.
12.5 is the Beta version. There are hundreds of additions and changes from the version 12. I am using the 12.5 and it doesn't seem to have any issues that I have found.
I have been in the same boat with CC. I have the full Adobe CC Production Suite and at $600+ a year I don't utilize it enough to justify it. I have downloaded Resolve both at home (older machine) and on my business laptop (9 months old blazing powerful machine) and in both cases I cannot get Resolve to run. Their support cannot figure it out either. I want to run Resolve bad though and cut the ties to Adobe.
I am downloading it right now. I know that 12.0 did not like my machines. So maybe this new version will work.
Nope. It will not run on either of my machines. It opens but crashes on my older PC. On my new high end laptop (used for CAD and engineering design work) it will not even open. My full Adobe suite runs on both machines flawlessly.
That's weird. Works fine in my laptop, but has an error on my pc. My pc had some demons though. Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
So I check this out, downloaded it, and have it up and running, but I am unable to load my videos because it doesn't appear to load mp4. I have used another free platform that would load mp4 and you could then convert from there. I know this is a stupid question, but I am new at this and although I have an IT background, I do not any video background. Maybe you could tell what I'm doing wrong or point me in the right direction.
I'm not sure why. It works with my xvac-l format which is way more obscure than MP4. Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
So after a bit of research it appears as though Davinci does not support mp4. A simple conversion to mov will do the trick.
Thanks for the info Skywalker. Much appreciated! Anyone have any sample vids made with Resolve 12.5? Would be interested to see what it can do.
I just completed the download of version 12.5.6 and it says that it is only a 40 day trial version. Has anyone with the newer version run into this?
I am not aware of any trial period. There's also a Beta version 14 out too. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/
