For those of you using the rodevideomic pro. I have been experimenting with the mic and camera volume levels. I'm shooting with a cannon hfg20 and soon an hfg30. Seems that a camera mic level of 50 and the rode mic set at +20db seems to give the best sound. It does seem to pickup background hiss but if you set it and lower its hard to hear anyone talking. So how about some suggestions….. how do you users of this equipment set your levels?
I use the VideoMic Pro, but a different cameras. Generally speaking, you are better off boosting the signal with the mic and lowering your camera levels. Especially with DSLRs as their preamps suck. Other than that, I try to get my audio levels to read in the -12 to -6 db range. That gives me a pretty good level out of the gates with a little head room for louder noises without clipping them. But I'll change my levels as the day unfolds depending on wind, the loudness of my voice, if I'm near running water, etc. Sound is the next area I'm really hoping to dive into and learn.
