I never cover the ports when I'm done just because every time I use it I'm using a lanc. I just make sure that it's always stored in a spot that won't allow dirt/crap to get into the ports.

So does that mean you can't get the cover on either?

The little rubber tab in the back, that connects the cover to the camera, has to be pushed back in. Once that's done it will lay flat. Alternative is to remove it and put in a bag to keep dust out.
