So who has a drone? Anyone using one for filming? What's your setup?

I don't have one yet, but now that they changed the legalities for "commercial use", I will be getting a Phantom 4 this winter. Unless of corse there's something better for my needs by then.

I have had one since early 2015. DJI Phantom 2 with too many bells and whistles extras to list (over $2,000 invested). I bought it to add footage to my videos. At the time the FAA really had guys like me hand cuffed. But it sounds like that is about to change.

Honestly, the novelty of mine wore off after a few months. I haven't flown it now in probably 10 months. I have been considering selling it.

Here are a couple video clips.

How much would you be selling it for?

They look great and would certainly make scouting a lot easier. However I heard that possibly B&C would not accept any animals in their book if they are scouted using a drone??? I haven't found anything to support that but can't say I've looked a lot either.

I've got a DJI phantom 4 and the think is awesome. I fly it all over the place. It gets a lot of attention.

So a co-worker just got a used DJI Phantom 3 Pro for a really good price. Got to mess with it in the parking lot for a few minutes on lunch today.

I'm gonna get one. Not sure if I can find a way to do this before season starts, but this thing is incredible. I'll have one for sure though by next year this time.

What are your plans for it, Matt?

I toyed with the idea of getting one, but like many said, I'm not sure if the novelty of it will wear off.

I want one where I can fly all my gear to the stand instead of having to carry it. Also in those occasions where deer are around when you want to leave your stand, the drone can flush them out of the area without tipping them to where I am.

I'm enjoying the filming I've been doing with my new G30. I really think I'm going to enjoy it long term but I'll know for sure after a full season of hunting while self filming and dealing with the challenges it presents.

A huge part of what I feel lacks in the outdoor film industry is the ability to tell a good story of someones full season. Lots of people do a great job of capturing the actual hunt, but I feel that a bigger picture of the entire story is a better way to connect. There are a few people that do this well, but not a ton and they are almost exclusively high dollar production crews.

I think there is a ton you could do with a drone to help capture that at a higher level. For what I'm guessing is $1k to get into a decent drone setup I think it would be easy to capture some really cool stuff I'm just not seeing in other outdoor films often.

I'm also seeing there is a REALLY strong used market for drones. So if I get one for a good used price and decide I don't like it, I'm pretty sure I can unload and not lose much. I've certainly spent $1k on much dumber things than this in the past........hah.

Curious to see how you like self filming. I'm toying with dabbling in it myself.

Careful. I now spend more on filming gear than hunting gear! :busted:

At least I can make money with the filming gear :tu:
