What say you? Would you rather shoot (get pictures of) a 150 perfect 8 or a 130 with all kinds of kickers double brows etc? Can't say both, one or the other picture is from last season, but we have a couple deer on our property that aren't huge, but are really interesting racks
I would rather big perfect deer. It's very difficult to improve the genetics of the area so if you have that to start with, it's most likely going to continue.
I see a lot of similar looking bucks year after year so I can see the genetics running through the population. I also hunt NW Missouri, Nodaway County.
Yeah, I hunt Dekalb County and have fairly solid 8pt and 10pt genetics. They are generally nearly perfect typical and have decent mass. I also hunt an area in Worth County and it's similar but they tend to have less mass for some reason.
Same here. Although my perfect deer would be a main frame perfectly symmetrical 8 or 10 with kickers on both G2s.
I like big deer and variety is good. Side by side.......... 130 w/junk vs. 150 clean............ I'd have to see the junk.
I'll take a 150" clean 8 every time, side by side a 150" 8 would dwarf a 130" buck with lots of junk. I also don't have a big 8 on my wall yet and want one.
I like character and trash but in this case I'll take the clean 150" 8 point, easy decision. 130 inches is still 130" no matter what trash it has, in fact a trashy 130" deer isn't going to be very impressive at all. If it were a choice between a 150" clean 8 and a 150" trashy character rack, I'd take the trashy buck with character. I like stuff that's interesting to look at.
150" 8pt. That's just a BIG deer! And I have some history with a deer similar to this size that out smarted me last year.
The vast majority of dedicated bowhunters will never see, much less shoot a 150" perfect 8 during an entire hunting career. That would have to be a GIANT 8 point. That's big for a 10, but simply majestic for an 8 to have that many inches. 130" of trash may be neat, but all in all likely not that impressive from a size perspective. I see 130" non-typicals fairly frequently (at least on camera!) Would I shoot one if I had the chance? You bet. But say I'm sitting in the stand and the scenario that airenlow posted above presented itself; and I'm taking the giant typical over the trashy character any day.
