Every once in awhile you get a deer on camera that you just know will be a mega giant if he can survive a few more years. Such is the case with Flanagan here. Last year he was a scrubby, whacky-racked buck we thought wasn't ever going to amount to anything. I personally thought he was a 2 year old as he had a monster body, although Mike disagrees and thought he was a 1 year old. Either way he was a very visible and dumb young buck we saw almost every other sit. Well this year his rack has caught up to his body and he's gone from a 5 or 6 pointer to somewhere in between 12 and 14 scorable points. If this guy can make it another couple of years I just know he's going to be a mega. Here's to hoping nobody else shoots him or runs him over with a car.
...OR EHD! What's the EHD threat like in your area this year? Looks good Justin! Even one more year and he'll be a giant.
Thankfully we've never had EHD on this farm or anywhere within 10-15 miles that I'm aware of. Things are a touch on the dry side but not horrible. At this point we probably have a better chance of our deer contracting CWD than EHD.
Ahh, I wasn't sure if it was EHD or CWD that you had experienced. Well either way, here's to hoping nothing bothers that buck!!
I have to dig and see if I can find a pic from last year. I typically don't keep photos of small bucks so I'm not sure what I've got. He basically had a small-ish 3 point side on his left that was fairly normal, and a big spike that came out almost horizontally on his right. But he had a really big body - probably pushing 200 lbs on the hoof which always struck me as odd.
Awesome buck, if you opt to pass on him and he makes it without anyone else taking him or falling to the elements he will be massive.
What characteristics did you notice that made you realize it was him if his rack blew up so much? Just curious. I have a hard time identifying does unless they have unique markings or features, scars etc. Bucks are a little easier cause of their racks.
