Hey guys, I want to get a camera out over some corn I'm planning on putting out but im worried the cold MN temps will be hard on it. Should I worry? Im probably gonna set up a Primos TC 46 ultra hd if that matters. Also, will Nimh batteries be acceptable in cold weather? I know most batteries decline in cold so I'm not expecting 100% out of them. Thanks ahead.
I've had mine out all winter with 0 problems... Go for it. They may not work as good or as fast in -20 degree temps as they do when it is 50 degrees... But they will still get the job done. I'm sure -30 degree temps will be hard on a camera, but I've not had an instance where it has negatively affected any of mine.
It doesn't harm the camera in any way, depending how fresh the batteries are. The batteries are key if you batteries are at 30% and it drops well below 0 at night there may not be enough juice for the camera to function, once it warms the batteries do recover somewhat.
I also think it may be a little slow you might point it down the trail a bit more, I like lith battery's for super cold, also you might runs some test in your yard before dropping it off in the woods.
I would do this as well ^^^ I have two Moultries that hardly work once the batteries hit the 30% mark, Low power should only affect shutter speed unless the camera has any moisture in it.
If I was knowingly putting a cam out in extremely cold times, I'm going to put Lithium's in it. They are just way better in colder temps.
One thing to remember is, when taking camera home leave it at home for a week or more (so any condensation that formed on or inside has dried) before you take it back out.
Avoid using video, it'll really suck down the batteries, especially at night. Lithiums will do better, but I use cheapo Rayovacs. Some cameras will hold up better than others, but I've gotten great pics even at 30-40 below. Check out the temp on the stamp, it's accurate too, we got to -39 that morning.
One of my old Bushnells didn't like temp from about 15-35*. Warmer or colder and it was fine, but it'd freak out in that range for some reason.
I'm in the same boat. Rayovacs in all of my cams, no video mode. I haven't checked my cams in 3 weeks... Interested to see the battery life on them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm still running strong on the sets that I put in at the beginning of the deer season (Sept). I have one I'll need to change out sometime soon, the G42NG. 30% last check. It's currently out in the cold on video mode
Lithiums work best others will freeze fast. Also, If the camera has been outside in the cold and you want to bring it back in the house before bringing it inside the house place the camera in a plastic bag for about one hour or until the camera adjust to room temperature. This keeps condensation from forming on the electronics and damaging them.
I just checked my cams after being out for the entire month of January... All have Rayovacs in them. My Moultrie took over 800 pics and I am still at 86% battery. 1 MP-E5 still going strong with 6 battery bars after taking 600 pics- Working flawlessly. 1 Mp-E5 is on 0 battery after taking 800 pics. It has not died completely but it did take quite a few black pics.
