After 3 months of this little cam being out, I feel like I have a good feel for what it brings. Pros: Awesome battery life. The AA's are saving me money over the D battery cams big time. Ease of setup. Easiest cam to setup and pull cards from that I have tried. Crystal clear daytime pics. They are the best I have found. Cons: Range seems fairly short. It seemed limited as a field edge cam, but did great as a scrape and logging trail cam. Fuzzy IR. It's not bad, but there are better I feel. My Primos cams seem to do a little better in this area. I will admit I was disappointed at first using this cam on a soybean field this fall. However as I moved it to a closer flash range area, it has impressed me. Saving $$$ on batteries are a huge plus for me. The video option was just kind of blah for me, not bad, but not great either. I prefer leaving it on the picture option. At full price I'm sure it is on par with some other cams out there. However, for the sales you find on them, I think it makes them more than worth it. I actually just ordered 3 more MP8's on sale.
I love my MP8s I got about a month ago, got 4 MP8s and and MP8 Black. I have been pretty impressed so far, especially with the battery life on the 2014s
This is not a knock on any one brand of commercial cam, but more so as a group all together. The ONLY thing keeping me from all but abandoning homebrew and sticking with commercial is night time pics. NONE, and mean NONE of the commercial cams I have hold a candle to homebrew's at night in terms of both clarity, exposure range, and motion control. Battery life on commercial cams, at least with Covert, can't be touched. The few Covert's I own are absolutely astounding on battery life. I've never seen a cam last so long on a set of AA's.
MGH, I have to go along with you on the quality of the night pics. Nothing compares to the night pics I get from my P41. csb
I'm always looking for a solid cheap camera. Here in my neck of the woods, bears enjoy punting cams around and I will not spend more than 100 for them. I've been keeping an eye on the MP6 because its in line with my price range and the performance is actually pretty darn good. As with any infrared cam, the night pics can leave a lot to be desired at time. I know many who went back to flash cams because of this. I personally do not think flash spooks deer nearly as much as most think.
I went away from flash cams for fear of the 2 legged critters walking away with them. I have walked past my MP6 at night and not even seen the light. But, the after dark pics do leave a lot of guessing.
Thanks for the input. Please provide us an update if things change. I might have to give the Coverts a go again in the future. Unfortunately the Coverts I bought at the beginning of the 2012 season are both dead. Didn't make it through 2 full seasons of use, and I don't even leave them out year round... : Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth... They do take excellent day pics and their customer service is second to none.
I don't own a MP6 but do have Red 40's and one Black 60. The daytime pics are always too dark and the videos are really fuzzy compared to my Bushnell 678 and Stealth G42's. I will never buy another Bushnell though until they start using ALL leds on night videos. It's borderline stupid to have 33 leds and only use 21 on night vids.
The MP6 is the first Covert camera I ever owned. It was stolen a few weeks back. It had taken nearly 70,000 pics. Here is one of the first pics I ever got from my MP6. I was hooked from then on! This daytime pic was taken with a Red40 in my Mother-in-laws backyard. This one was taken with the same Red40. The house is about 50 yards from the camera.
