Anyone have an idea what this critter is? Don't think it's a squirrel, rat, or coon. Not any real bodies of water nearby that would make me think it was a mink. Weasel maybe? Moultrie A5 camera.

First time I've caught a mammal that small on camera at night. It's obviously not a squirrel.

Probably is but it's dry as a bone where the cam is placed but there is a pond to the south maybe 1/4 mile away.

    Mink for sure.

Front legs are too short for a marten.
Body and tail are too fat for a weasel..

I have some property on a small creek, one day there were several muskrats of all sizes playing and splashing. Here swims a mink downstream. Muskrats gang up on the mink, he jumps out of the water not 10 feet from me and shakes off, stares me down, jumps back in and swims back upstream. Yep, my grandpa and I used to trap them when I was growing up in the 1960s but still I never saw one this far from water.

I also think its a Mink. Before their coats turn prime in the Fall/Winter they are black. In the pic, to me he looks black?

not sure, but there are in central Illinois.

I'm saying mink as well. Mink don't necessarily need to be right next to water.

I agree...I've come across them before as far as over 2 miles away from the closest pond or river way before... He could possibly be a young-un out looking for his own territory.

I think it's a mink but it could be a small fisher

The OP is from TN, so I'd assume the pic is from that area to. I'd say mink or weasel, martens and fishers are more Northern animals.

That fat south I'm going with a mink then. It's too big to be a weasel. IMO
