Has anyone ever taken game with an English longbow? Would be really interesting to know and hear about it. By English longbow I mean a self D section bow of 120lbs+. Traditional arrows also.
I made one a few years ago but it was way short of 120#. It was for my Daughter, around 37# @ 26".. I've already got some 70# bows that have out-grown me so doubt I'll be making any 120#.. I did make an American Longbow (flat limbs) that's 63#@ 27". Complete penetration on deer sized animals was not a problem. Still one of my favorite bows.
Back in the day Saxton Pope hunted with a 70 or 80 LB Yew Bow with anything from rabbit to moose. He also learned how to shoot and hunt with Ishi. He wrote a book about his adventures: Contents for: Hunting with the Bow and Arrow by Saxton Pope, 1923. Enjoy! 120 LBS is overkill it seems like to me.
