What would you do if you encountered a sick or crippled buck in the wild? Would you burn a tag on a sick buck?... Read more... The post Would You Burn a Tag on a Sick Buck? appeared first on Bowhunting.com. Continue reading...
What if you only had a single buck tag and it was the first week of the season? That's a much more difficult decision. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it, but there's always the option to call the DNR and let them handle it.
How well do deer with 3 legs do in the wild? What about a sick deer...they sometimes recover right? Next time one of my kids breaks a bone or gets sick then i guess ill just have to put them out of their misery. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I would just because I couldn't let that guy suffer. Also the thought of disease spreading is not cool.
Now, if I had one tag...I would have to think about it hard...that's just the cold hard truth. I guess it depends on how sick he was.. deer are tough and they can survive harshness. if was emaciated and looked like he was suffering then likely I would shoot him. If he looked overall healthy and not skin and bones that may be a different story..
I've done it before. Once I put him down I called our Conservation Officer and he gave me the option of tagging the buck and keeping the antlers or not tagging it and giving the antlers to the Conservation department. I just decided to put my tag on it even though I knew the meat would not be good. I could have left him lay for another day and the coyotes would have gotten to him, but that just didn't seem like the right thing to do so I ended it swiftly for him.
You only get one buck tag here in PA, if you shoot a sick deer, you can call a game warden and have them inspect it. If they deem it "unfit for consumption" you get your tag back.
Yes, I would, even first day of the season. Sometimes doing the right thing sucks. But ethics and hard choices are what we, as responsible hunters should always make.
Who to say if you don't tell anyone. If I'm back in the woods or mountains some where all alone and this situation comes along I would have to make sure the animal is that sick or badly injured. Why not put it out of it's misery. Leaving it for other animals to feast on. No one has to know. The only thing if it is sick what disease does it have? That's the only thing that would worry me. So maybe just a badly injured animal and not sick. That is a good and hard question. I only get 1 tag and need to fill the freezer with it.
Bit dramatic, No doctors for deer, I hope you take your kids to the doc instead of letting their bones grow back and heal on their own hahah. Never had to make the mercy kill call.
I hunt two different counties that are both 1 buck counties. I can kill two bucks but only one per county. End of the season, probably. Early in the season, nope. I am calling DNR and let them handle it.
