I had the enjoyable experience of crawling across a plowed field holding an old turkey fan and enticing two toms to come to me. Short version of the story goes, I saw two toms running off jakes about 200 yards from me in a plowed field. They were unresponsive to my calls so I grabbed my turkey fan and started crawling to them. I crawled about 50 yards and then they saw me and came the rest of the way to me. The sight of seeing two toms coming to me as I am lying down in the prone position in the middle of a plowed field was pretty amazing as a hunter. As they were coming I spotted the one with the fuller beard, they got to 20 yards, and I put one down
What a rush! You'll never forget that hunt I'm sure. Congrats on a nice Tom and unforgettable hunt Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Guy in PA just got shot in the face by his buddy using a fan like that. Congrats on the bird. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
Congratulations! It is a very effective way of killing turkeys!! You'll get a lot of the traditionalists that hate it and think it's stupid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I did something similar this year. While I am not a gun hunter, I had been wanting to try reaping one for a while. So one afternoon a couple of weeks ago while out checking trail cams, I saw a big tom in my back field. He was all alone just going in and out of strut. So I ran back to my barn, threw on some camo, grabbed an old tail fan and my 12 ga. When I got back out there he hadn't moved very far so I hatched a plan to exit my woods on the opposite side of a corner from him. I no sooner got out the woods and on the ground with the fan in front of me, and he came around the corner in full strut. I started crawling at him and he just stared at me. Then all of the sudden he dropped out of strut and charged at me. He came on a dead run. At 10 yards I pulled the trigger. I have to say that it was one of the most exciting turkey hunts that I have ever experienced. I want to try it with my bow next year. To those who say it is not safe ... if you know your land, do it in the wide open, and are aware of your surroundings, then it is as safe as any other form of turkey hunting. It has its time and place.
I think its pretty stupid that people get shot or doing it like this. Its called hunter safety 101. " Be sure of your target and what is beyond" If your too dumb to realize that its a person crawling behind a fan holding it up etc. then you really shouldnt be hunting. Know your target! I personally cant wait to try this in a field where I hunt.
