I may go out just to do it, but with the heat/skeeters/processing time, I probably won't put much effort into it. But, I get a lot of good daytime pictures of the "good" bucks during this time, might be worth trying to get to them early. Disclaimer: This theory may change as we get closer to that date.
While I don't have any early season spots in Tennessee to hunt where there are decent bucks cruising early, I'll still be out just because I can be out. Hey, there's always a chance. The very next weekend the Kentucky bow season opens and I always get a "chance" at a velvet buck there. I just keep screwing it up. I can feel it. This is going to be the year I get one.
I have no desire to climb mountains or jump out of perfectly good aircraft, but lots of folks do. To each his own I guess. Sometimes you have to suffer a little to get what you want. I'll take a sit in high 80 to low 90 temps over a sit in below zero temps any day. Either way you suffer, and sometimes, like my running coach used to say, you've just gotta "suck it up, buttercup".
I'm looking forward to it. I have only shot one in velvet before. Its very seldom that bucks hold there velvet till the end of Sept. in TN. I know 2 years ago I had a 2 1/2 8 pointer held his till mid Oct. I tried every way in the world to kill him for those 2 weeks. Only saw him 1 day had him at 40 with no shot. Its going to make me try to want find a decent deer to hunt even more now! The only problem I see with it is. I think people are going to shoot smaller deer that they normally would not shoot just because of the velvet. ( Not saying that I won't decent 3 1/2). I just hate to see the small 1 1/2 & 2 1/2 bucks that will be shot that weekend.
Most of our deer season is in sweaty weather. I've seen crawling snakes on December 26th and I've had to use a thermocell in December, too.
