I really do not like the idea of having to drag around a large deafening expensive revolver when hunting. So, is there any way to protect yourself that doesn't involve that? Also, please don't say bear spray. I have seen a video where a guy got mauled even though he used the bear spray so...

And what about wolves and pack type animals? I mean, is a 5 shot revolver enough if you have to go with a gun? Is there anything else that works against them?

Have any of you tried that Salt pepper ball pistol? Would it work?

I carry a .45 but that’s more for protection from any two legged creatures that shouldn’t be on my land but think otherwise.

Pack animals? Coyote or wolves are not going to attack you.

A 5 shot revolver is fine for pack animals, just shoot the Alpha.

In a place where there are bears to the north of me, wild cats to the south of me, more bears even further south of me, probably more bears and cats to the east and west of me...

And wolves can be an issue, specially if rabid because then, even if they don't kill you with their gnawing on you, they kill you with rabies. And the part where they portray this as rare is something I doubt. I have seen others complain of wolf attacks before and I bet they didn't report it to the news.

    http://www.nbcnews.com/id/35913715/ns/us_news-life/t/fatal-wolf-attack-unnerves-alaska-village/

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/teen-survives-first-confirmed-wolf-attack-in-minn/

    https://gothunts.com/wolf-attacks/

And then there are the bulls in the grazing areas that could pose an issue... so yeah... oh, and then the moose likely further toward the north of me... and then the times where I go through areas that have signs that say "don't get outta your car, there are mountain lions here" or something to that effect. So...

But please focus. I did not ask if the threat exists. I ask, how does one defend against it without some stupid, noisy, overpriced fire arm.

Why are you so focused on the noise aspect of the gun? Who gives a crap if it’s noisy, if something or someone is coming at your are you going to throw on some earmuffs or apologize for the impending loud noise?

Carry a gun as a sidearm if you really want to. Doesn’t have to be expensive.

Um, no, but I'd rather keep my hearing intact. If I am in a forested area... or really any area actually as I have seen lynx in non forested areas.... anyway, my ability to hear is one of the main ways I would be able to detect an animal in the area, so I'd rather not damage it.

Um, yeah, not trolling, although it is becoming rather obvious that you are. I cannot imagine that you are actually this stupid. But let me explain. We have these things called ears for a reason. Animals also have them for a reason. They are sensory organs that detect sound emitted by things around us. This allows us to have better awareness of our surrounding which helps ensure our survival. Being able to hear the breathing of a mountain lion or a twig snapping as it steps on it can be quite useful if it is sneaking up on you from behind. Also, deer have ears. They use them to detect predators which helps keep the deer from dying earlier than they otherwise might... so yeah... have I sufficiently explained the function of ears in wild environments or do you need me to elaborate even further?

So, no guns, no bears spray, and needs to be quiet and able to take on multiple attackers. The only thing that I can think of is a compound bow or a samurai sword?

Please explain this to me. I ask for ways to defend against wild life without using a gun due to all the drawbacks, and instead of answers that involve something along the lines of "yes, you can do that with this yadda yadda yadda" or "no, we know of no gun alternative which fits in the parameters you have established" I get BS trolling about how I shouldn't care about my hearing.

Perhaps I am a bit precious to expect more than that on an internet forum.

That was the issue with the compound bow option... it requires two hands to operate and takes too long to get ready. Cross bows have an issue where you only have 1 bolt, and I doubt any safety worth trusting.
