Hey guys, just wandering when you start doing mock scrapes? I usually start about this time of the year but wanted other hunters opinions. And what about making your own watering hole??? Use a kids pool and bury it? Or a hard plastic material like a backyard pond type? Pros and cons? Thanks!

I'll start a mock scrape whenever! the key is to put it where the deer travel! and I have seen people use kids pools I feel its flimsy plastic, I like the water bins used for cattle they hold more water and are more durable. A pain to put in the ground I will admit, also putting a stick in the water source so if a rodent falls in it can get out!

I don't get the whole "need" I see for burying them. I have several and only one I buried and one I dug. All others are either just set and filled or set brushed in and filled. All with escape limbs added. They are all used by all animals including turkey, fox, raccoon, deer. The buried one attracted frogs to breed in it and they foul the water big time. Though I grow a great "crop" of frogs every year and that is important when frog numbers in nature are dropping.

I put in a waterhole about 2 weeks ago and the deer are now starting to get use to it. I'll have to post pics later.

One steel bath tub,pic below it's usually brushed in better but I needed to clean and raise it this spring. I have 3 cattle tanks and 2 koi ponds get used a lot by everything.

I used a kiddy pool for water in 2012 when we had a bad drought. But I haven't done it since because there are already many water sources on the property I hunt. It was alot of trouble getting the water back to the pools when I had them in place. I refilled them about every three weeks. I've got a giant cooler and it involved filling it with water and then musciling it onto my 4-wheeler to haul it back. I'd do it again if we had another drought like that but otherwise, not.

    Blessings...........Pastorjim

I rarely need to refill but I place them so it isn't a problem if need be. A small wagon and a plastic 55 gal barrel. I then take a 5 gal. Bucket. I fill barrel while in the wagon and just drive to what ever one I'm filling. Usually after a cleaning. The cattle tubs get a algae in them in real hot weather.
