So my wife’s cousin and I are planning our first ever elk hunt and am looking for some info on best places to get maps, suggestions if willing on areas to go and just general tips on help for first timers. We are currently looking at Montana, Wyoming and Colorado with most of my time being spent on Montana so far. We are thinking that for the first few years we will rifle hunt to get a lay of the land before uping the challenge to the bows however have talked about bringing the bows with on the rifle hunts. Thanks in advance

Google earth is a great place to start. If you’re a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, they have some great maps. If you’re not a member, become one. Banquets are a good place to “ network”.
Don’t overlook Idaho, not a giant bull behind every tree, but a good hunt. Less grizzlies than Montana too.
Check out Wapiti Talk forum, heck of a lot of knowledge over there.
Spend your money on boots first, pack, and sleeping system.
Have fun planning, get in shape, enjoy the hunt and good luck.
