Hey guys. I've got a couple of questions concerning coyotes. So here's my situation. On my bowhunting land in Minnesota, I have a mother coyote with four pups living on my hunting land. My first question is should I kill all these coyotes? And my second question is, if I should kill them, how do I kill them without spooking the deer?
Kill for sure, those 5 will soon be 25+ As for not spooking the deer, could you trap them? (no idea if that's legal where you are)
It is legal, but I don't have any traps. Our bowhunting season starts mid September, so I'm looking to get rid of them asap, yet without spooking the deer. So I'm kinda stuck on what to do
You could not kill all the coyotes and some are needed. Here in Kansas in an area of public land when I started hunting there 5 years ago I would see several coyotes every time but very few fawns. Seemed like every knob would have a pack of coyotes singing at dark. I started in January with the . 22-250 and the next fall I started carring a .22 mag pistol (legal in Kansas while bownhunting) for shooting coyotes. I got about 2 dozen the first year and then the last two years ago a flood came about the time the pups were born. Last season I did not see a single coyote all season but there are still some there. However I saw the most fawns ever there. I shoot all I can but do not think I could ever get them all. I shot one and dropped it with the .22 mag one morning and about 15 minutes later heard a deer blowing and a doe was standing by the coyote. I drug it off at lunch and that evening the deer passed by with just a sniff of the spot.
Not sure what the laws there are but in Mississippi I can hunt coyotes year round by any means. So if it's possible I'd mount a varmint light to my bow and go after them Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
If I were you id go out and bow hunt them at night, Sure they're going to scream and make a noise but the deer will soon get over it I expect. Coyotes are always yelping and making noise anyway so nothing too out of the ordinary
Trapping would be your best bet. Go to www.growingdeer.com and check out different trapping methods. Runs traps for along as the season is open. You will never kill them off by just hunting them. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I personally wouldn't really worry about getting rid of a mother coyote with 4 pups before the season. If anything hunt them after the season. Trust me those aren't the only coyotes on your property anyway. It takes waaayyy longer than just a few months to get rid of a coyote problem, if ever.
We can also hunt coyotes year round. How would I hunt them with my bow out of my stand without the risk of losing an arrow?
Ok so I should be alright if I shot one? I'd have to shoot it with the bow tho if I waited till the season started. Would I lose an arrow if I shot it out of the stand?
You might be putting too much thought into it. Just hunt during your season and if you see a yote shoot it. I don't think id be night bow hunting coyotes 2 months before deer season starts.
If i was to shoot them with either a shotgun or rifle, should I wait till after the season? Or before the season?
I don't see it being any bigger of a chance that hunting deer. Just make sure your shot placement is right and there should be no problem. I normally go with a .22-250 but I understand wanting to keep it stealthy. I've shot bobcats out of my stand with a bow and never had problems with it. If you do it though and end up putting a light on to hunt at night you'll need to re-sight in your bow to accommodate for the added weight Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
If I hunt them during the season, will I be at risk of losing an arrow? Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
At $28.00 a shot that is why I carry the pistol. Keep Arnold shaft and broad head for yotes but lighted knocks helps me find my shafts.
If I use my bow, should I use one of my "older" broadheads rather than my new ones I use for deer? Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
