I don't want to detail the tread recently posted so I'll start a new one. I may? have posted this before but not sure? Keep an opened mind here fellas as it sounds kinda hinky but... I've been doing this for about 15 years. Takes a bit of work but trust me, it works VERY WELL. First off, you have to be certain they spot has to be where a mature buck would be safe bedding. This takes alot of things into consideration. I've found an overhead thick canopy key. Next is a good dead log for a backstop. Other things such as secure areas, doe travel routes, good trees for rubbing, escape routes also are key. I buy regular square strawbales and lug them in. Can really be a pain but. Break the bale and spread it out. The pile will look HUGE but it will get beat down over time. I'm not great at portraiying detail in writing so you fellas can go from here. It's been a super fun ( never heard of thing before) in writing thing I've done but after doing it, I'll say it works incredible. Here are 3 bucks I've killed coming off the beds I've made.
Grizzly, try it and throw a camera over it. Be fun to see the results Trying to get one more pic to post but to no availe?
On a side note one of my buddies saw this tonight. Full albino. I wont be able to hunt it but I'm gonna try to set a trail cam on it next week to get some clear pics. I've never seen once since I started hunting in 1992. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I have never heard of anyone doing this but it is a really cool idea to possibly make a mature buck more consistent with his bedding location. Just curious as to your time frame for putting out that bale of straw? Also, here in NY we aren't allowed to bait in any sort of way. I know it is straw so the deer won't be eating it, but I can see a DEC officer scratching his head at the motive behind it, as I'm sure there's been NY hunters that would and do try and bait with straw.
Thanks guys. Have wanted to post this for a ew years but it seems like anything " new" usually gets turned sideways. Cml. I've put the out in May thru August but I find later is better. If I put them out early, the piles will be so beat down by fall there ain't much left. Far as I know, deer don't eat straw. At least I've not seen them do it?. Granted, it's alot of work humping bales back into thick cover when getting swarmed by mosquitos but it works so well it's worth it. Hope you fellas try it.
I think I’m gona give this a shot this year, of all things I try just to see this may be the simplest lol Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Well crap, I can't get the other pic to post. The first pic, I had a bed about 60 yards away. Lots of small basswood trees for rubbing. Yes, that's a rub behind me. Second pic is a group of trees that get rubbed every year. There is a bed about 10 yards away under a big blowndown tree. 3 Rd pic, I watched this buck coming along the river , he got about 60 yards, made an abrupt turn, walked up the bank and dropped right into a bed. He layed there for about an hour before he got up and mosied my way . Shot him at 3:30 p.m..
Do you know for sure if Do you know for sure that you have killed a buck that was using one of your beds? How many bales per bed are you using? I personally think this is one of the best ideas of heard of in a long time. Blessings..........Pastorjim
Yes sir, I watched them get out of the beds. Have watched plenty get up and not come my way also. One bale per bed. A compacted bale makes a BIG bed when fluffed up. Thank you.
It would not be considered baiting. Straw has no nutritional value and animals do not eat it. Making buck beds works. I made one by accident when I tossed out an old bale I didn't want into the woods behind my house. There are some good videos of this on YouTube.
