I posted something about wishing i had learned about investment in school and someone else mentioned it would be a good thread so here it is. Lets hear anything and everything you wish you had been taught while in school that would be beneficial to you now. I'll start. Anything at all about taxes Basic investment strategies Other things, but I'll give others a chance first
I'm taking both Business and Consumer Math right now,not to trying to highjack this thread but what are the more important things that I should pay close attention too and what stuff will I not be as likely to use later on in life. Anything relating to finance and investing. They actually did teach this at my school in a lot of electives. I just took all electronics and computer classes
Besides how to have good attendance? I can't really think of anything, my school didn't have an auto shop or construction program which might have been nice but I learned both of them from my Dad growing up. I know my kids have a finance class that deals with budgeting and investing. It is a basic introduction but I don't think we can expect to much more at the High School Level.
In Highschool? Honestly I believe in the matters discussed parents need to lead by example. Show your kids what comes in explain what goes out to pay for the house, taxes, utilities, etc, the choices made to live responsibly. Not sure I want some unionized liberal public servant explaining the birds and the bees and how to plan your life economically. Not ripping on school teachers but I believe the public school teachers are there to teach not raise a communities children.
High school or college. I wish that the $80-$100K I spent would have led to more useful life lessons. Instead of learning anthropology or coding (useful to some but I was a marketing major) I would have loved to have been able to pick electives to learn what to claim on taxes, how insurance works before needing it, the process of buying a house and what to expect, just things like that.
When I went to college I had a deal with my parents they paid half I paid half. I got thru college with no grants, aid or loans I worked every break I had and all summer working for a well driller. It simply is not possibly anymore with what college costs and I do not believe the value of the education has kept pace with the costs.
If we tailored college more and eliminated some of the nice to have classes, I bet we could easily drop 1 year off a 4 year program. Saving 25% on the cost right there.
Two classes that I think should be required in high school are: public speaking salesmanship Whatever you do in life, you have to be able to present yourself and sell yourself, whether it is in an interview or even just in showing up to work. Now if you want to get into some of the nitty gritty stuff, some of the functional; ie; how to balance a checkbook etc. would be great but the most important skill to teach someone would have to be........ there are real deadlines and yes, work starts at 7:00 AM and you need to be there every day BEFORE we start work.
Not sure high school kids are ready to learn that kind of stuff, sure they can be taught the material but not sure they would grasp it. I know when I was in high school if you cracked my head open nothing but vaginas would have fallen out.
My high school career and my 1st go around with college was spent chasing women and trying to find alcohol. You could have tried to teach that to me and I wouldn't have listened. 29 year old me is playing catch up now though. Sent from my LGLS992 using Tapatalk
Basic civics. I learned them; but I'm 40 and pretty sure I was the last generation to do so. They flat out are not taught anymore. Its a giant scheme, if you guys had been taught how to do taxes, invest, and buy a house the country wouldn't need CPAs, Bankers, and Realtors They are keeping their trades a secret on purpose
Years of basic handyman stuff would have really helped me around my house. Investing. I really wish someone would have taught me how to be a great investigator of facts and writer.

Somethings are learned from the teachers and reinforced by parents. Then the parents should key word make them better for when they hit real world or have the tools to apply later. Respect yes mam and no sir tip ur hat buddy
