In a semi-related matter, I could never understand why guys would hang their bows on a hook on the tree while hunting in the middle of the woods. To me, it's just an unnecessary way to get busted while reaching for your bow.

Why would you go thru the time and energy scouting and setting up stands then do things that are counter productive to being successful? To each their own but I do not have a bow hanger.

There is no way i'll hang on to a bow the entire time I am in the stand. I do a lot of the time but there is certainly always a bow hanger with me.

My bow is always on a bow hanger. I see no point in sitting there all day holding my bow. In my relatively limited number of years of bow hunting, I can count on one hand (and still have fingers left over) the number of times a deer has managed to sneak in close enough to me that taking the bow off the hanger would get me busted, and even then I've not been busted taking it off the hanger. Just move slowly when the deer isn't looking your way.

I've said it before: When I'm on a stand I don't surf the web, play games, read books and I very rarely text. I hunt and I pay attention. I'm always scanning and looking. By the time a deer is close enough to pick me off I'm almost always already on my feet facing the deer with the bow in my hand. If I decide not to shoot then I hang it back up once the deer turns away. If that's not the case then in my opinion I've done something wrong.

If you get busted reaching for your bow then you don't have enough cover in the first place.

I guess I don't hunt like most, I rarely sit more than 3 hours. I keep my bow on my lap and move as little as possible. My deer season is not a long drawn out affair I do not hunt until the time is absolutely perfect. I use trail camera and long range observation to see when the bucks are starting to chase and then it is on. I sat 3 times last season for a total of 8.5 hours, my goal every year is to get it done fast. Sitting motionless is intense believe it or not.

It is so much easier to keep your hands warm and to sit in a very still and comfortable position if you are not stuck hanging onto your bow the entire time. My bow will always hang and I have never been busted reaching for it. I have also never missed a shot because it was not in my hand. In fact, I have killed deer because I was able to quickly grab a grunt tube or can call or rattling antlers that would not have been possible if I had a bow in my hands. Hanger for me, every time.

Oh, I believe it. That's why I don't do it. I don't make big, exaggerated movements, but I don't sit perfectly still. I don't even know if that's possible for me. Like I said, I scan as far as I can see in all directions. It's difficult to scan behind me if I'm not willing to move. :)

I always use a hanger. I try to position it so I don't have to move much to take it off the hanger. I especially love it when it's cold so I can keep my hands on my pocket. Plus, I think there's nearly as much movement taking your bow from the horizontal position to vertical if it's laying on your lap.

I just watch the does they let me know when the big guy is coming in. Part of my tactics are from being covered up by does when I sit, if I get busted game over not for that sit but for the season. If I get busted I abandon that stand the rest of the season. I will not put a stand up in a tree where the trunk is not wider than me at stand height.

How could you ever get busted!? You sit motionless with your bow in your hand in the perfect tree with the sense of a jungle tiger. No way I believe you ever get busted. Your just trying to make us feel better about merely being mortals without a clue.

Well that is because getting busted by a doe doesn't count. Because does are not deer.
