This saturday I was doing a 7.5 mile run and after a while I had like 5 dogs chasing me. What do you do when dogs chase you when your running?
That's ridiculous... I've heard that dogs will stop chasing you and run off once you stop running. Personally, I would bring something to defend myself if things escalated.
Pepper spray. Also, Most dogs will stop if you stop. The faster you run the faster they will chase. That is all except a Pit-bull. they are born evil and will charge though a glass picture window, swim across the family pool, leap the 4' tall rot iron fence and run you down. notsrs about pit-bulls. lol
Also, did all of the dogs come from the same place? If so, maybe a call to the police should be in order?
I've been chased, bitten, threatened, mock charged, etc all while running. It is to the point now that I just cross the street when I see a loose dog in someone's yard, even if it's just some little poodle. I run mostly on sidewalks within the city limits too. No idea why idiots let aggressive dogs out in neighborhoods. My favorite was when I was bitten by 2 dogs and the owner told me that they would have left me alone if I would have just stopped running. I'm running on a public sidewalk. I shouldn't have to stop running to not be attacked by your stupid dogs. Anyways, when I do get chased, I generally just stop and yell at them. 99% of the time, they will stop and just bark after that.
I got sick of dogs, drivers trying to run me off the road, yelling obscenities, throwing things etc.... It is supposed to be enjoyable... I run somewhere safer now.
Yep, most of the time just stopping, facing them and yelling "NO!" takes care of it. The word "no" seems to be a universal dog training word and usually works really well.
I don't know about a knife, but putting pepper spray in one of the gel pockets in my running shorts sounds like a pretty good idea.
Having been called to many dog related complaints on the job, I have tried pepper spray on both dogs and coyotes. I have also had runners try using it. Most of the time it is difficult to hit them and has little to no effect. I had a direct hit on a coyote from about 3 feet away and it sneezed once and stared at me. I would say running is your best bet, and if it is still a problem call your local police department and ask if a community service officer would be willing to meet with you. They handle most of these type of calls.

I've been chased by dogs more times than I can count. I've only been bitten once, but I have had to kick a few dogs that didn't back down once I stopped and yelled for them to go away. I usually carry a folding knife clipped to my shorts - I don't wear a fuel belt or anything, so it would be very difficult to conceal my pistol. Maybe my next purchase My wife carries pepper spray, and has used it before on a few dogs. One time the owners were there, walking on the trail with their dog unleashed. Dog ran up to my wife barking and got sprayed. Owners didn't like it, but if their dog had been leashed, as required by law, and posted for a reminder on these huge signs right by the parking lot and trail entrance, then they wouldn't have had that problem.
