What do you guys think is the ultimate caliber? Able to take any game with ease out to 200 yards. Flat shooting powerful cartridge. I'm talking about a cartridge that will handle bison, deer, elk, bear, pronghorn and moose. This is completely opinion based, no wrong answers. Not looking to start a fight

This question is impossible to answer. Only to 200 yards? I would take a 7mm-08 or .308 every day. Plenty of knock down down for anything out to 200, zero recoil, and a lightweight package.

Basically an unanswerable question. They make so many different calibers because every different application has its own "best caliber". But, if I could only have one caliber to use for everything, I would stick with my .300 WSM. It would definitely be overkill for varmint or smaller animals, but it can handle any kind of big game animal like a champ.

If you are looking for one gun to use for pretty much any big game animal in North America it's hard to argue with the 300 win mag...but it's also overkill for a lot of things especially if your only shooting out to 200 yards

30--5 it's over 100 years old and has taken every north american game animal. 110 gr to 220 factory.

The sticker for the question is " out to 200 yards" ....that being the case I would take .280 Remington and kill everything in North America without killing my shoulder and ears......

I would say that 30-06 is the best caliber out there hands down. Its a joy to shoot and has some serious knock down power.

Then lets make it 500yards . And we're just talking big game. That will make it easier. Just want to hear some opinions

I assume you meant 500 so I am going with a 280 Ackley shooting a 150 Barnes TSX.

3200? Maybe of you have a 32"+ barrel and are loading a load that is compressed as hell. Your 180's might do 3200. I use the might lightly.

THIS ^^^^ all day long. My .280 is deadly well past 200.

For 500yds, I don't know for sure. I'd want a .300 of some sort most likely. My gut says I'd be just fine with a .300 win mag and some handloads.

Problem is, most folks have never shot 300yd, much less 500yd. It ain't easy - regardless of what gun you are using. I shoot groundhogs with my .22-250, farthest kill about 500.

I would go with 270 ... Powerful, flat shooting, and can easily kill anything in North America.

I was going through this question last summer, decided on a 25-06. Should be perfect for all small to medium sized game, but not to much over kill. And when I do plan on hunting larger game I'll probably go with a 338 or 300 WSSM.
