I was wondering what mechanical broadhead you guys would recommend. I've used the schwacker a and they seem to be tore up bad after a shot. I have also used nap killzones this year and haven't had great penetration with them. Right now I'm using fixed broadheads(G5 montecs). I'd rather use mechanicals than fixed so can anybody give me any recomendations? Has any one used the dead ringer 3 blade rampages?
Ive had bad luck with the rage broadheads. They seemed to close up on the way through and they are not very durable. The G5 T-3`s ive had good success with.
whitecotton03 we have the same limitation due to t-rex syndrome. Which Killzone did you use? If you used the Kill Zone Max try the standard Killzone or the Killzone Low KE. I noticed a some issues with pentration (i.e. less pass throughs) with the Killzone Maxx and decided to switch back to a fixed blade. The NAP Shockwave has 1 1/8 3 blade cut and does really well. I shot a hog with the dead ringer 3 blade rampage and did not get a pass through. The entry hole was only about 3/4 inch but the head opened up and cut a massive hole internally. The problem was a sparse blood trail. Good thing it expired in sight. It will definitely kill but I decided against it for this reason.
I had T3 open early on a shot the one year I tried a mechanical. probably my own fault but didn't trust them after that and went back to fixed blades. good luck with your search.
I can't say anything about rages new design, but I have the original rage 3 blade and love them. I have never had an issue with then and they are devastating. I haven't had a deer go more than 50yds yet
I have went few years were I killed every with mechanical heads, I tried most of them ...and although I don't use them much anymore, I still keep a few around for special situations . The two heads that performed most consistent for me were Rocket Steelheads ( the originals ) and NAP Spitfire Edges.
I don't get pass thru shots with the standard NAP Killzone, but they produce very quick, humane kills. Took a nice 9 last year, and a nice 8 this year with Killzones. Neither deer went further than 30 yards. Both were heart/lung shots. Awesome mechanical head.
I shot a doe with the killzones this year, lung shot to be exact and maybe got 6in of penetration. She did die but I had little to no blood trail. I shot her at 15 yards and figured I should of had a pass through or atleast better penetration than that
I've had good luck with the spitfire and spitfire maxx, I shoot a very heavy arrow and seldom don't get a pass through
As far as mechanicals go, a few years ago I used grim reapers on a couple black bears and one deer. And they were all pass thrus with solid blood trails. I did switch back to fixed tho. Used them just for a trial but I liked them. Try the original ones with the smaller cutting diameter. Good luck with your search.
Shwackers, got a friend shooting the new Ulmer Edges for deep six arrows/small diameter arrows and loves them, they also make them for regular diameter arrows, they look a little different. I switched back to the Shwacker 1.75 inch, the blades are alot more tough than the 2" or 2.25" and more penetration.
I use the Grim Reaper mechanicals and they are devastating! I also have there fixed blade Hades and although I haven't had luck this year to draw on anything, they fly just like field points with the Maxima Reds.... Good luck in your search!
If penetration is the concern, look at arrow selection and build before thinking another mechanical will fair better would be my recommendation.
Rage titanium, for those that complain about bent and broken blades you know you can buy new blades right?
