Yes without a doubt. It doesn't matter, it's physics. I can't think of a situation where a light arrow would out penetrate a heavy arrow out of the same set up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A arrow with a proper FOC( front of center) percentage will out penetrate anything no questions asked
ok im currently shooting Easton axis 9gpi 27.5 inches measured from nock grove 100gr head total weight roughly 405gr . shot a deer Monday 12yds from stand good shot but did not pass completely through . thinking of going to 29 inch fmj and 125gr head. need to mention current axis is 400 spine , fmj would be 340 spine . my bow is a PSE DNA SP 60lb 28 draw . FEED BACK PLEASE .
Just because you didnt get a pass through on that shot means there is something "wrong" with your current set up. Did you hit and ribs or the shoulder? Was there an angle on the shot making it more travel through the deer? 405 seems to be the light side. I dont know what the average on here is but I shoot 458gr and I really like it. Unless you start talking extremes like the heavier arrow will out penetrate due to the added momentum. Its easier to stop the lighter projectile, and you dont get enough speed from the lighter set up to make up for the loss in momentum.
I shooting a 421 grain fmj at the moment. But plan on adding weight tubes and heavy tips to be around 550 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Get that same arrows you have now cut to same lenght but get 100g brass inserts instead of regular inserts, and go with a 100g head and that will work a million times better. Build yourself 6 of these arrows with a 100g brass insert and compair them to your current arrows and after shooting the 100g brass insert you will want to make 6 more because they fly so dead in and hit harder than anything you've tried before
I think it does. I guess it is like throwing a heavy rock at a window with the same force you would throw a small rock (at the same type of window).
Not always...you put for argument sake a 20% FOC but with a noodle light of an arrow up against a 15% FOC on a properly spined and heavy arrow....bet the low FOC wins. There is extremes both directions but yes science is science OP, and with the same draw length and weight a heavier arrow will always carry more penetration potential than a lighter one....and no it doesn't matter if you have a 4 inch wide mechancial on the tip :D
Not always. You take two identical weight arrows with different FOC's and now the higher FOC wins this argument. OP, if you are shooting 60# with that short of an arrow a .400" spine is still plenty for a 125grn head.
Oh I concede that willingly, didn't make that clear enough. I love heavy arrows with high FOCs...animals hate them haha!
I agree 100% about arrow weight and FOC, as I shoot a 470gr arrow. The question I have to ask, is, what broadhead are you using? That plays a big role in penetration. SCFox
The broadhead design will also make penetration better or worse. A 2 blade single bevel will out penetrate any mechanical regardless of the weight of the arrow, provided it has adequate foc.
Heavy arrows do great. My PSE Revenge I shoot a 455gr arrow and my Hoyt Faktor 30 I shoot a 405gr. which isn't real heavy, but the 3 deer I have killed this year with my new Faktor have all been pass through's with 2" Shwackers. two of them were at 20 yards and one was 38 yards and it pass through no issue.
