I know how to get over a fear of heights! I used to have it but I needed work, got hired on as a high rise window cleaner. Sitting on a board hanging off the side of a building either learn to control an stop the fear or pee your pants and cry those are your two choices 60 floors up haha. I used to get sketched by spiders so I bought myself some tarantualas (can't spell sorry) I learned how to care for them an everything now I don't mind spiders at all I like mine an ill now nicely move wild ones I find in my house with out killing them first, big step to how I was couple years ago they got smushed ASAP.
I'm kinda like Indiana Jones when it comes to snakes, I hate 'em. It's not that I am really afraid of them I just think they're weird. And I've owned lizards/chameleons when I was younger so I don't know why I hate them so much. Maybe it's because Satan took form of a snake in the Bible. Who knows...
Carlson gave you some advice, sounded pretty good. Knowledge is power. If you still can't overcome your fear, seek a professional. It is worth doing I would think, if the alternative is living with intense fear you don't need to have.
I really don't see the need to seek help for my fear of snakes. I see a snake, I freak out then I kill said snake. I still don't see it being a problem. They aren't endangered and I haven't killed one in 3 years. You are welcome to your opinion but I'm perfectly happy with my fear of snakes because I could have a fear of something totally stupid then I WOULD have to seek help.
Just be thankful you don't have tree vipers where you live, those wuss snakes you're killing with yard tools wouldn't scare a small girl child around here, your first tree viper sighting will send you running to garage for nothing less than a Stil 460 magnum with a 22 inch pro series bar for that extra reach which everyone thats ever seen one knows is the only safe way to deal with an angry tree viper. Be careful out there.
I have a friend in Louisiana that talks about poisonous snakes he kills all the time... making gumbo.
You can't kill them all.... so kill all you see, you can't go wrong. LOL Oh you can let the black snakes, garder snakes and all those walk.... but when it doubt.... whack 'em.
I don't kill any snake I encounter. Just this past Friday I was trimming around my quad trailer and found a copperhead. It was already hauling butt away from me, so I just chased it until it went into the woods. What good would it do in the grand scheme of things to kill it? For every one you see there are a multitude of others that you don't see. I can't help wondering how some of you folks would have held up walking the levees in a flooded, mid to late season rice field trying to locate a leak. Growing up on our farm, I had more close encounters with water-moccasins than I could ever begin to count and I never came close to being bitten. I got my butt whipped once for bringing a live water-moccasin in the house. I just pinned it's head down, picked it up and went inside to freak my mom out. It worked too well.
