Tony's thread has us arguing at work....

    Is there a void?

Can you hit a deer below the spine and above the lungs?

No void. You're an EMT right? How much pleural space is there in a healthy individual?

and....The shape of the deer's ribcage means the lungs actually go up higher than the bottom of the spinal column.

Not to mention the dorsal aorta of a deer runs right along the bottom of that spinal column.

    NO VOID.

No void. In my opinion, most of the time when the shot looks like it was high and the "void" is blamed for no recovery, the deer was simply shot through the loins.

I believe most "void" shots are above the spine.

Im in agreement with you Christine,

I think the real argument is, can deer survive a lung hit?

FYI, everyone here is an EMT or Paramedic, so medical terms are encouraged...

not sure but there is def a no mans land around high front shoulder.... depending on the angle i know from this past weekend the high front shoulder shot has a chance of not being a fatal one :(

My opinion of the Void was always that these arrows hit ABOVE the spine...I've pulled enough backstraps out of deer that showed me there was still a lot to hit above the spine near the shoulder area...

Also, i dont think most hunters realize how much a deer dips and turns away from the shot, putting there body at a different angle then when the arrow was actually realeased.

This picture explains a lot. I shot a doe years ago and hit her higher than I wanted and she literally fell over and died. I have spine shot deer with a gun before but they never just died like that. I always explained it to myself saying that I scared her to death. Now I believe that I hit her in the spine.

The photo Fitz posted does a great job of showing you why the high front shoulder area is not an option with bow. The spine dips down really low there. Your arrow likely went above the spine. Good luck on your next opportunity.

Does any one remember the episode of Bone Collector where T-bone makes what looks like a great broad side shot on a deer clean throught and throught pass...the same deer travels over 2000 yards and is shot my Micheal Wadel.... that has always bothered me was it shot placement or broadhead failure? what do you guys think???? check this thread on archery talk http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1400196&page=6

So the consensus is: Deer are devoid of voids to avoid? There you have it.

I have seen a deer survive a level shot, thru the body cavity, just under the spine at the back end of the rib cage right around where the inner loins are, as they were cut. My dad killed this buck and upon skinning we found the second set of holes. That is 100% fact.

A really long time ago I killed a doe with scars on both sides of her body, kind of high, but I honestly dont remember it going thru the backstraps. I wish I wasn't so young and took better pictures, as my memory has faded since that. I could have sworn at the time the scars and old healed over wound channel lined up below the spine, and had just clipped the one shoulder blade but I cannot say with 100% certainty anymore that it was thru the chest cavity below the spine.
