So about 10 minutes ago 2 coyotes chased a fawn at about 100 yards.there is not as many fawns on my property as there was last year and I think the coyotes or the bobcats got them. I am going to hunt them but there is no fields for coyote hunting around here only hardwoods how would you guys hunt them? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In an area that gave me as much visibility as possible. Use a calling method and set up in an area where they can't easily get downwind of you and if possible use a "SMELLY" bait with the calling. Can be slow but when you are restricted to wooded areas only that's how I would do it.
Trapping is your only option if you want to rid your property. Calling you might get one or two before they wise up to the calling. If you don't trap contact your DNR for state contracted trappers and call them for help or contact your local trappers association for trappers in your area. I'm sure they would be glad to help you out. I trap my property every year for those critters. They are not smart and follow their nose. But they remember and get wise to experiences and misses so a few quality sets are better than 10 just thrown out there.
Trapping along with baiting is what we do. I take deer carcasses and put them under chain link fence staked to the ground. Having a few guys with AR's is the best. Also baitcicle set. We picked off 5 on one barrage on a baitcicle set. A bait cicle is deer scraps and warm water (to pull the blood out) then freeze in 5 gallon bucket. Put this on frozen pond and let them get comfortable feeding on it. They will be able to lick it and gnaw on it but not carry it off. When a few of them come out on ice to feed then let em have it. They wont be able to run off very well on the ice. Thats why ARs are best for follow up shots. Between us and the neighbors traps we got 11 on one property last year. Calling them is is fun and more sport like but if you are just trying to control them then baiting and trapping is where its at.
I think that you could say that we have a problem with coyotes here too, when we got a game camera picture from under an apple tree with 4 coyotes in the same picture.
I hate the idea of baiting, it's an easy meal for them when their hunting is unsuccessful. I'd rather trap or call, it they're going to eat they're going to have to earn that right on my property. I have a group that run coyotes with hounds all winter, don't have a coyote problem. I generally get 1 or 2 pics a year of them, never see any from stand.
True. Pay attention to local laws. In illinois where im at it is legal to use bait and electronic callers. They got very liberal (hate that word) with the coyote laws in IL cause we are infested. Only restrictions are you cant use deer slugs, three round shotgun rule, and 24hr/day is only peak months Nov-Jan. There is no limit and even bounties in some areas.
I know what you mean. I was torn the first time we did it. But we cleaned up quite a few. It turned out to be effective. We are going to do this at another property we have that is out of control
Yeah I thought about that but there is property's right next to mine and we all have dogs that run the property. The good news is the deer aren't scared of them but I can't use traps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
