Setting your state laws aside as I am sure each state laws are different. Would you or have you parked on the shoulder of a state highway to gain good access to a hunting spot. Obviously there are some safety concerns among other things. Thoughts?

I have often considered having my wife drop me off on the shoulder and I can hop the fence and enter the back end of the public grounds. The back is pretty hard to get thru. You have to walk thru a good size swamp.

Get at least of full vehicle width off the road. Completely in the ditch if there is not an access drive to pull in on.

Not possible. I may be able to get over a few extra feet but would still be on the shoulder. I've already done this a couple times at this spot without any type of issue and can't find anything within the law that prevents me from doing so.

I told my wife I had been doing this tonight and she thought I needed a sanity check. So I am asking!

I've not done it but I have seen guys that have. All the one I have seen are parked behind a guard rail. Just kinda back in.

I guess I'm afraid I'd come back and my truck would look like most vehicles that set on the side of the road. Windows all broke out and a few of the tires gone.

I don't think that often occurs after the car is parked there as much as it is the reason for the car being there in the first place. :p At the same time it was a concern of mine as well.

Only problem is that if you do kill a deer how are you going to get it out?

not on an interstate. but what I used to do is hang a white rag out the window as if I was broke down. helps not having any type of hunting decals plastered all over the vehicle. I don't like people knowing that I hunt. I don't need any company.

I used to do that until I came out of the woods to see a cop by my truck and long story short i got an improper stopping ticket. So yes it is ok to park there just lock your truck but make sure it is legal.

I just did this. I, luckily, was able to see my truck from my stand, but it made me nervous. From someone coming to steal something, or someone not paying attention and hitting it, I did not want to leave it there, but I had no issues.

If your worried about theft, I don't see it any riskier that a public ground parking area. I mean lets face it, they know why your truck is there.
The ticket and possible collision would have me more concerned if any.

Well if she does not like it, she can drop you off and pick you up. :)

I'm pretty sure the law where I live is that the breakdown/shoulder lane is for "emergency use only". I think if that's the law and someone hits your vehicle while you're hunting , it could really open you to a lawsuit so definitely call your local state police barracks and ask first.

Even if it was legal in my state, I don't think I'd risk being parked there unless I was able to get completely off the paved shoulder and even then I would probably be worried.

I see people do it but they are always all the way off paved road. I dont think i would do it unless i could get all the way in the grass

I guess I personally would never do it. It actually annoys me a little bit to see because in my mind, that area is for emergency vehicles, slow moving vehicles and vehicles that have been in an accident/flat tire etc.,.

Thats how I hunt every time. Parked right off the hwy. Heck thats how many people hunt up here. I dont have a choice, its my only place to park. Now my advice is do not lock your doors. If you do they will just break your windows. So dont leave anything inside it and keep it unlocked. Thats what i do. They can have my spitters

I think you should open open all your land to others to hunt so they don't park on the shoulder and annoy you. :p
