I got to my land late only to find 3 deer already in the field. I succeeded in stalking withing 35 yards of them, but they then heard me step on a dead branch, and spooked, not knowing i was there. They circled behind me, trying to figure out what I was (I was crouching, and they didn't know what to make of me), and milled around just out of range for a while. Eventually they caught my wind and got out of there. By the time that stalk was over, i had less than 25 minutes of light left. So i just crouched behind a sparse wall of dead vegetation at the edge of the field. I figured I wouldn't see anything, having blown three deer out already. But I was wrong, and a doe came from the other side of the field with less than 10 minutes to close. Across the field is the county highway, so it was an unexpected place for a deer to approach. She angled in and I drew back, not wanting to wait for a closer shot because light was dwindling. I estimated 25 yards, but I think it was more like 22 or 23. I shot from my knees, and watched her duck almost to the ground before hearing the telling "schlock"of my arrow impacting. I figured it was a bad hit based on how much she ducked. But heard her fall in the field 40 yards away. Probably the proudest moment of my life. We waited until after dark to recover, and found her right where I thought heard her fall. My neighbors were super helpful in dragging, gutting, and butchering. I rely on them a lot, since my parents don't hunt. Regardless of the remaining month and a half, 2015 will be remembered as a great season!
