Ok so I know this is a bow forum but I've ran into a problem, I was shooting my muzzleloader to make sure it was still sighted in, later that night I cleaned it as I always do. I don't know how or but the wire brush I use everytime got stuck. Finally I got it out and didn't think anymore of it. Fast forward to this past weekend and I'm sighting in my 270 and my 30-06, I figure hey why not shoot the muzzleloader. I load it and shoot, the gun fires off but the bullet literally goes like 7ft in front of me. I do this 5 more times before accepting the fact that something was seriously wrong. I did notice after the wore brush got stuck it was 10x easier to seat the bullet in the barrel, could I have scraped out the inside of the barrel or what?
dont know how the brush would of hurt the barrel... something else must be wrong.. my advice.. take it to a gun smith..
Right caliber bullets/sabots? Sounds crazy I know but worth a shot. If they're too easy to load, they're not getting enough pressure built up behind the sabot. I have also had issues with the end of a ramrod "unseating" a bullet or pulling it out of the sabot. There's no way a wire brush alone would cause the problem. It sounds like you are cleaning it completely. Hot soapy water and a patch on jag is the better cleaning method for ML. A trick to getting a wire brush out of ML is to twist the rod CW a 1/4 turn and then pull. On the other hand, you should NOT need a wire brush to clean you ML.
I'm wondering if you inadvertently put a 45 caliber bullet into at 50 caliber barrel. It would explain why the bullets are going in easier and only traveling a few yards( most of the expanding gas is passing through the gap).
The bullets I'm shooting are the same bullets I've been shooting for the past 2 years and I've never had a problem with them before, when I pulled the wire brush out it seemed to have what almost looked like metal shavings on it but the inside of the barrel looks fine honestly, I don't know what the problem is.
Is it possible you grabbed the same brand, same appearance pack of bullets but they in fact are not the right caliber? .45 caliber sabots with small bullets? Was it a new pack by chance? If not, I'd be taking it to a gunsmith asap.
Nah it was an open box, I go by a local gun shop on the way home looks like I'll be taking it by there on the way home
If the bullet fell down in the barrel without much effort and you're sure you used the same exact ones that worked fine previously, and you made sure to use a sabot, it sounds like something is wrong with the barrel. Powder is another idea but that wouldn't explain the bullet just dropping down without effort. How bad did this brush get jammed down the barrel and what force/effort did it require to remove it? If you had shavings come out, the barrel might be corroded/damaged. I'd take that to a gunsmith so they can check it out.
I just don't think it's possible to remove that much metal with a wire brush. The barrel is a harder metal than a brush Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The powder ignites and the gun goes off and I had to beat on the end of the cleaning rod to get it out
I would take it to a gunsmith ASP.Not worth having the barrel explode and getting blinded by flying metal.
