I was reading an article about business in the Twin Cities shutting off their big advertising lit up signs after 10:00 to save energy and provide protection from peoples exposure to light pollution. BS that is a made up ailment by the greenie cult. Come to think of it the whole concept of light pollution pisses me off, it is not pollution and there is no harm from exposure to lights in a urban environment. It is simply something for people to complain about when they can't see the northern lights.

Light pollution has nothing to do with harming people.

It just means excessive lighting. We don't need everything lit up all the time. I have no problem with this.

Calling it pollution adds emotion to a debate that should be based on logic.

The only person getting emotional about this seems to be you

Yeah I am old and grumpy and when I read a story claiming fictional "light pollution" harms animals and humans it leads me to go on a rant.

Maybe rather than turning them off, they can top them with solar panels so they can power themselves. I imagine it's to save on energy usage. I personally hate it when the kids/wife leave the lights on in a room when no one's in there so I guess I can't say I disagree. The main reason I like to limit light "pollution" (I agree the name isn't fitting) is so I can get better quality imaging through my telescope.

I agree 100% about people in a household wasting electricity, I curse myself if I forget the back door light on my way out in the morning and see it has been on all day. I like to see the starry sky and northern lights it is a big reason I live in an incorporated township rather than a suburb. People wonder why they get laughed at and have no credibility with their complaints when they feel something has to be done about a fictional problem. I would venture to say that light pollution provides for public safety and cuts down on crime.

upon further review it was a headlined top center of the page featured letter to the editor in the minneapolis Star Trib. Makes you wonder what was not published to make room for that.

except when you pass that 8 billion megawatt sign by the highway on your way to hunt and then you see white spots in your eyes for the next 3 hours....

I don't think illuminated ad signs are installed for "public safety" or to "cut down on crime". They aren't considering turning off street lights, are they......?

Oh street lights are pollution too, that is if you subscribe to the light pollution theory.

Call it what you want, but there is clearly light pollution all over the world. There are only a couple spots in this country where you can see the sky and stars without the affects of man made lighting. Does it make you sick, maybe not but it might contribute to making people a little crazier than they normally would be. I remember living in town and having the streetlight shine into our bedroom all night every night. Hated every second of it, that's why I live where I live. Closest neighbor is a half mile away and as of right now, there isn't but one yard light that I can see at night. It's amazing to just sit outside and stare at sky at night without all the light pollution from the city to drown out the amazingness.

Pollution: Harmful or poison substances introduced into an environment. If "light pollution" compromises your quality of life quit complaining move from the urban area rather than suggesting society change.

I never suggested society change, but is it necessary to burn the candle all night long, or blow it out when you go to bed??

People apply negative terms to things they don't agree with all the time. For example - greenie cult.

Don't get me started on the mandatory recycling, it is a cult built on have truths. They don't publish the data on the real carbon footprint of recycling. There are people with agendas pushing to regulate based on beliefs rather hard real data, what would you call them?
