With a 3-week old newborn and 2 other kids under 4, I didn't get out for the opener last weekend. Wife gave me an all-day pass to hunt today for my bday, so I made the most of it & got meat for the freezer 1 hour after first light! Okay it's only a fawn, but not sure how much I'm gonna get out since I have almost no vacation time left, so I shot the first thing that came along. Well, actually the second, because it was a set of twins and #2 gave me a slam dunk shot at 15 yds. I had just sat down and took my first sip of coffee, and noticed the first coming my way. They stood broadside and fed right in front of me for more than enough time, and I got a double lung shot. Gave it 20 min and checked the arrow, which I could see from the stand had plenty of red. Started to figure out which trail she took, and when I finally saw the blood I heard it jump and crash not far. So I went back in my stand and finished my coffee, which tasted like success! She only got 40 yds and was an easy drag. The cost to process around here is crazy, so today for the first time I skinned, quartered and cut out the meat from the back, ribs and neck. Felt good to get outside my comfort zone, and it went well. Daytime temp hit 60's and the bugs got bad, so I finished the job in the garage. This is my second suburban deer behind my house. Need accurate shots and short blood trails since I only have 1.5 acres.
Congrats buddy! If you get the chance since your spot is close by give it a quick sit this time next month!
Yeah, I'm checking my camera to look for any legal bucks around here, but I'm hoping to hunt for my buck at our cabin in the mountains during the early November rut. Need a 2-day pass! If necessary I'll hunt here at my house since I get some respectable bucks that pass through my deer highway that I only ever see once. Thanks all!
