I was going to say afternoon but after having really thought about it, Im split down the middle for morning and afternoon.
I'd be a midday as well, 9:30am through 2pm. Might be what I am offered to hunt, travel routes vs feeding areas. All of my bucks have been shot between Nov. 5 and Nov. 18 I believe. Talk about rut dependent.
I spent many hours in the tree stand in the famous 10-2 time period with only one buck to show for it and very few sightings. Many times I have sat all day during the rut only to see deer the first couple of hours after daylight then dead until the last couple hours before dark. Just hasnt worked for me, like others.
Here's a layout of my 5 best bucks 120'ish to upper 140'ish. I have no fields to hunt, just a lot of travel routes and bucks cruising during the rut. The clearing on the north side is a highline clear cut owned by the power company. Has a lot of Russian olive on the north side that is a bedding heaven for the does.
A lot of this poll result will depend on when guys spend the majority of their time in the stand. I have killed several good bucks mid morning but seldom have time to sit past 8 am. I think 9 til 1 is killer during the rut.
i've killed most of my nice bucks in the evening but i hunt that time most often. pecenatge wise though, mornings have been better
First light for the most, second would be evening about an hour before dark. But about 4 hours before dark has produced more of my biggest deer.
All but one of my bucks have been in the early to mid mornings between 7:30-9:30, but all but two of them were during the pre-rut/rut.
I think it depends on what you are hunting as well. Ive killed most of my bucks in the afternoon, but some of the biggest Ive seen are in a spot between two bedding areas. The VAST majority of the time in that spot, the sweet time is between 8 and 9 or 7-8after the time change. I figure they bed down just after first light and get up around 8 to move or check the other bedding areas. Another spot I have (which Ive killed my two biggest bucks in) is all field hunting and it's almost pointless to go out there early. They almost always move into the fields during the last hour of light.
My 4 largest bucks were killed at first light, 1 hour past first light, 1 hour before dark, and 1/2 hour before dark. I have spent a lot of time hunting mid-day hours over the years but have never have killed a large buck that time of day. I have had some big buck sightings during mid-day hours though.
