Was able to connect with my target buck on my 3rd hunt of the season. Shot him at about 6:45pm this past Thursday. I had not even planned on hunting that evening because I have classes until 4 but luckily our professor let us go early that day. I was extremely excited because we had just had a front move in and temperature dropped roughly 20 degrees. I knew this buck had been frequenting a spot by my stand almost every night but always showed up about 20 mins after dark. With the temp drop and the overcast, slightly rainy day we were having I knew there was a good chance he would get out of his bed a little earlier than normal. I was pretty sure I knew which direction he would approach from so I had my eyes peeled on that trail. The wind was not cooperating though, it kept changing direction. I knew if I was going to have a shot I would have to take it as soon as he cleared the brush and before he got down wind of me. So, I see this buck walking at a steady pace on the trail I was watching but for some reason I second guessed myself. He did not look nearly as big as I thought he would so I didnt know if it was the buck I was targeting. I let him clear the brush and walk into an opening about 5 yards in front of my stand and down wind. That is when i finally realized it was my target buck. He turned his head the other direction and I drew back (for the life of me I have no recollection of whether or not I even stood up). Shot was perfect double lung, clean pass through. He ran about 40 yards and i heard him crash. I immediately sent a text to my dad (he had promised to get this buck mounted for me if i got him). I told i still wasnt sure if it was the buck i was after. Got down and retrieved my arrow to confirm the shot i made. I waited for my fiance and dad to get there to help track. Buck was recovered about 10 yards off the four wheeler trail and this is when i was finally able to put my doubts aside, it was my target buck!! I was so happy i cant even describe the feeling. Bucks this size arent shot very often in the area I hunt (mostly because people around here shoot anything thats brown). I promised myself this was the only deer i would take a shot at this season, hoping to let some of the smaller ones grow. It feels great to have a plan workout like this and to get it done so early in the season. I want to thank everyone on the site because although I dont post often, i am always on the site soaking in the knowledge. My 3rd season hunting and my second buck that is truly a trophy in my eyes. Cant wait to get him back from the taxidermist!!
I didnt proofread this because im still so excited, just started typing aimlessly so if its a little hard to follow i apologize
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together! Great story and a great buck. Congrats! Blessings.......Pastorjim
