I just shot an 8 pointer opening morning! He came in at 5 yards. I waited for him to take a couple more steps out of the way of a small tree, and he did, and I stopped him right there. My only concern about the shot was the lighting. It was a little darker than I wanted, and I couldnt see the pin the best, but Im pretty sure I hit him well. I heard him stop running, but Im going to wait until 8:30- 9:00 to go look for him. He came in rubbing a tree like he was a monster (he wasnt), and Im pretty sure, Ill be uploading some pictures around 10:00
Was thinking the same thing... Can't see the pin on a deer at 5 yards doesn't sound like a good situation. Good luck on the recovery.
I just want to get it out of the way and please don't assume I'm blasting you. Nerves, that amped first buck coming in of the season feeling can override logic at times. BUT, in the future if you can't see the pin clearly do yourself and the deer a favor and hold off shooting. Far too many things can go wrong when you don't see the pin clearly or be able to tell where you hit them, you stated yourself "but I'm pretty sure I hit him well"...I pray you did and cannot wait to congratulate you brother. BUT, if you can't tell where you hit a deer, it was most likely too dark to safely and surely let an arrow fly. Again we live, we learn. I hope to see a cheesin' dude holding some bone here in a bit, but even if so that doesn't change the shot sounds way too iffy to be encouraged. Okay now for the pics brother!
Never ever post on the internet or text that you hit a deer until it is recovered. Bad juju if you do....
Haha you should re-name this thread "Opening day buck down (I think, I hope?)" Don't count your chickens before the eggs hatch. Goodluck on the recovery.
Good luck on the tracking. All of us know as hunters the deer isn't down until you put your hands on them. Hopefully you have success in that!!
Deer has been recovered. I don't want to steal his thunder so I'll let him post the pics. Nice job Shane!
