A little rain wouldn't hurt but it's not looking good here in South East VA for the opening day of archery this Saturday. Hurricane Joaquin looks to be headed our way.
Yea I feel you're pain...after such a dry September the rain decides to move in for bow season. It was the same thing last year here in PA on the first day. I don't mind a little rain but when we're talking hurricane weather I might just miss the opener.
The best time to be out is going to be when it starts to clear out, deer move like crazy after a major system finally starts to clear. I always try to be in the woods on the last day of a Nor'easter when the rain is just tapering off...all of a sudden the woods come alive with deer moving everywhere. I swear they are like us, they get a little stir crazy after being cooped up.
In my area of PA it's calling for rain and a steady 7mph wind. No complaints from me! Bought a Hawk wingspan umbrella just for this weekend.
I am in Jersey and the forecast just keeps getting worse! May have to get in a ground blind if I don't get stuck at work!!!
Looks like a washout in PA for me. I don't mind the rain, but on the first day of our season, I'd hate to make a mess of my gear already. If its pouring like they're calling for, it will be a day on the couch watching football and enjoying a few adult beverages.
NY isn't looking to dry either! Winds are anticipated to be in the 20-29 MPH range as well....This will be interesting!
Northern VA is a washout Saturday for me and Sunday is looking like a small window maybe at the end of the day. The only up side is next weekend is a three day and the woods will have had no or little pressure I agree with the passing front and movement if only work was an option
Go out anyway. Ive seen some big bucks in hard rains in and around the MD/VA areas. Ill be out saturday with freshly waxed strings
I wouldn't worry about it. Save your enthusiasm fot the rut. It's probably hot as hell in VA right now anyways. Easy for me to say up here in Iowa, though.
Temp have actually rapidly dropped. Supposed to be upper 40s at night. Not looking good for me to hunt opening weekend. 10 inches of rain expected. If it clears out for even an hour in the afternoon I'll be hunting. Deer will move like crazy after 3 days of storms.
Now they're calling for some clearing around mid afternoon on Saturday for our opener. Fingers crossed. Would make for a great opening day hunt weather wise between fronts.
Dang hurricanes - they just can't hit during summer months, huh? I'm totally bummed too. I wont hunt archery in rain as I'm still waiting for my first archery kill and don't need rain washing away my tracking blood!
I'm with you. I just don't like hunting in heavy/steady rain for that very reason (tracking). Personal choice, of course.
Well it looks like i'm not the only one bummed out. Getting rained out the first day wouldn't be as bad as getting slammed with a Cat. 2 hurricane. The last time we had an incident like this in SE Va it took several weeks to clear our hunting path's/roads and repair tree stands. What a mess.
I'm right there with you. Calling for heavy showers and 15mph winds where I hunt. I will hunt light rain, but not heavy showers. I never miss a PA opener but I may miss this one.
Sunday through Tuesday look promising here in VA. We'll see how accurate the forecast is though. I'm hoping for a Monday morning hunt & maybe Tuesday evening. The temps still suck though (75ish) so I'm not trying to burn up any vacation to sweat my butt off in that humid mess.
