Hey Guys, So what is the longest shot you would ethically/practically take? I've been wondering this for a while, as I've been bowhunting (only traditional) for about three years, and I've been shooting bows a couple years longer than that, and I can only/will only take a shot out to 30 yards. I've been thinking about possibly getting into compound bow hunting, so I was wondering what all of you compound bow shooters out there would consider your longest ethical shot. Thanks.
I killed a doe last year at 50 yards and was quite comfortable with the shot. Thats as far as I would shoot deer though. I'd go 60 for elk.
Depends on the landscape. For eastern whitetail I woud say my max is 40. Larger animals like an elk maybe 50 or 60.
3 years ago I shot a doe at 80 yds. No kidding. Now days I wouldn't shoot over 50. I practice at 60 yds. The HHA computerized yardage markers are good. I'm the most comfortable btw 30 & 40 yds.
Depends on the animal, terrain and other conditions. I've killed hogs and antelope at 50 yards but prefer 30 and less. For me bowhunting is about how close, not how far.
Shoulder bladed a nice 8 point at 15 yards few years back. He ran, stopped, started to lick his shoulder. Ranged him at 73 yards and put one clean through both lungs. Awesome feeling.. 40 is my max if it's not a follow up shot
I have never shot further than 35 and wasn't real comfortable with that shot. Too many things can happen between the release and the impact for me to want to take longer shots.
This question seems to come up a lot. But theres so many different variables to put a finger on my number. The longest deer shot I've taken is 50 and a coyote at 65 but I also practice well past 100 so those are routine on paper but then again nothing is routine in the field
Well, thanks for all the input guys! I'm thinking that if I convert to compound bows, my maximum hunting range will most likely be 40-50 yards.
My hunting limit is 40 yards. I have never shot at a deer that far though. Tonight I had our target buck at 40 yards exactly but between the strong winds and me shivering, I didn't feel comfortable taking the shot in that situation.
