I am going back to Colorado next September and for the life of me I can't decide on a pack. I want something in the 5000 ci range that can handle heavy loads. Meat shelf is a must. I am 5'8" tall with a 30" waist so that may limit me on some. I will be using this for a multi day hunt as I plan on separating from the main camp for a few nights. I want to stay around the $400 range but if a pack is far superiors be willing to save for something nicer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have a Stone Glacier. The frame has a meat/load shelf with it and there are a few options you can do that'll fit your price range. Used it this year to pack out my elk in UT - 80 lbs of boned out meat was the heaviest load. It handled it well, it hurt though. Not as young as I once was (a whopping and ancient 41 yrs old).
M young still and can handle some abuse luckily. Although I do feel older then 25 most days lol. I'll check them out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Check out the Alps Outdoorz Commander...you will not regret it. http://outdoorz.alpsbrands.com/products/packs/hunting-packs/commander-pack-bag Got mine for like $150 on amazon. Bad freaking A pack for the cash.
I used the horn hunter full curl system this year and loved it great support and took everything I threw at it including packing out 3 trips of meat 1.5 mile each way great pack!
Is it comfortable to carry for multiple days? Is it durable enough to last for a long time? I don't want to keep replacing packs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You should have lots of options in that range. Before you buy you might want to call the company to ask to see if a 30 inch waist belt works with their pack. I know a friend of mine had that problem. I have a tenzing. Good pack. Well thought out for backpacking. Badlands. Eberlestock. I would look into KUIU. Really good stuff. KUIU is pretty athletically fit so I'm guessing you wouldn't have a problem with them. I would still call though. http://winterhawk.com/flat-tops-wilderness-area/selecting-a-backpack-for-your-wilderness-elk-hunt/
Didn't even think about my waist being an issue. Thanks. The alpz pack that was recommended scares me a little with all those pins attaching it to the frame but they have an extreme version that I do like a lot. Looks real nice! It runs at $329 http://outdoorz.alpsbrands.com/products/extreme/commander-x-pack Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
http://store.kuiu.com/ICON-PRO-5200-p/62007.htm I would look at this pack. Saving you 4 pounds. Doesn't sound like much but it really is. 9 pounds for a pack seems heavy. I have a tenzing 6000 which I bought not worrying about weight and it weighs 7-8 pounds. I haven't heard anything bad about ALPS bags though. Even though it is $120 more. I would say it is worth the cost. Not many items that can drop you 4 pounds when you are backpacking for elk. You would need to special order that pack for a S/M size. One listed as L/XL runs from 33-44. S/M runs 28-33. Should work great for you. Your feet will thank you if you go with a lighter pack. Just my opinion and how I would go if I was buying a pack again. Even though I'm happy with the Tenzing I have. Wish it was lighter and would have paid more attention to weighing everything.
I ruled that pack out because I thought it didn't come with the frame for some reason. I'd gladly pay more for something as tested as the kuiu. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That might have been what I was thinking. Because I built a bag and it was like $700 lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I only used it one season (2014) but will use it again next year when I go back west. But there are hundreds of reviews on amazon, and most are 4 star or more. I did not use it as my day pack, I used another alps Outdoorz pack for that. But it was my workhorse. Yes, it's very comfie. At least for me at 6-1/200.
Are they better then the kuiu? For the extra $100 in not seeing it. I think the kuiu is about as expensive I want to go and it's $470. But like I said if it will last longer or is that much better I will definitely look into it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
