I thought this might be interesting. Deer wanders in on you and plops down. 30yds. No wind. See pic below. Are you taking the shot? If not, what changes in the scenario/pic for you to consider a shot? (Apart from a better pic)
I doubt it, I don't trust my eyes far enough to be certain of the vitals in that situation. I prefer to get a pass through double lung right in the arm pit from a broadside to slight quarter away. If I took that shot, if something happened and I didn't recover that deer...I'd hate myself forever over it. The only way I WOULD take that shot is as a follow up and I have done that a couple of times.
I don't see a problem with taking the shot since the vitals look completely open. I really don't know if I would or not though. I think to find out for sure I would need to be put in that situation. Another thing is that it depends on how bad I need the meat. But more than likely not.
To take the shot with the bow, what needs to change? Play along...figured this could be educational/interesting.
To far for me maybe if they where right under my stand to where they have less of a chance in flinching or getting up. At 30 yards that deer could IMO move a good bit and wounding the deer becomes more chancing. So not taking that shot to far.
I wouldn't take that shot, but if she put her back legs more under her like she would normally bed I'd take the shot. If you have a clear shot at the vitals, the deer is unable to move on the shot when bedded. She can't drop, no way she springs up in that time. With her rolled like in the picture it's just tough to know for sure what you're shooting at.
No with bow. The shoulders are blocking much of the vitals. Id wait for her to stand then see what happens. Gun at that distance yes because it would penetrate the shoulders if contacted.
If you would happen to take the shot you would not need to worry about the deer dropping if its already on the ground!
not saying she will drop lol but she can move enough for the shot to go bad at 30 yards plus if this is the view she is looking in your direction so chances are she will move some kind of way even if its a 1 0r 2 inches it can matter. So in other words don't shoot lol
No with the bow. Just too risky. I would definitely wait for her to stand. Maybe if I got impaicent, I would give a light grunt or wistle to encourage her to stand.
Exactly as that one is laying....yeah, I'm shooting if it's a deer I want to take. Her vitals are completely exposed. It's a bit smaller of a target at that angle but you still have a cantaloupe size vital area to hit. If my footing is good and I have time to range her I'm sending one her way. I shot one at that same angle and position several years ago. Some of you may remember the buck where I almost cut its heart in half back in the HNI days. He made it maybe 10 steps.
I pass on that shot only because of the angle, unless I am off with the picture she is quartering too...and in that case I have way to much of the on side shoulder showing. What would change to make me take it ...well Would be on the opposite side or she is more quartering away, even quite a bit quartering away ...I take that shot, if I can quarter through the diaphragm into the vitals .
Unless it's my phone playing tricks, she's basically broadside and looking away (brown ears). That being it's 50/50 whether I shoot or not. If she rolls more upright, I'm sending a spitfire her way.
She's laying slightly quartering to with her belly facing the camera and looking basically right in the direction of the camera. This is why I said I don't trust my eyes that far to approximate where the vitals are situated, lol. There's not a very good consensus between the forum as to how she's even laying.
If I used Rage I would shoot. Doesn't matter where you hit them with those broadheads! lol Seriously though, I'd probably pass because she will get up fairly soon and I'd have a better shot. But I know I could make that shot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sure, it's my backyard where you can get some easy lay ups and the deer are plentiful but where is the fun of that?
Not me. If theres about 5% doubt im not taking the shot .... and theres about 80% doubt in my mind on that one.
