I don't know how to explain it well but when I have it in 5th gear and throttle almost maxed out it will start to stutter and get choppy. Those are the only words know to explain what's happening. It's not smooth all the way through like before. Now that I think of it it didn't happen before I filled the tank with fuel. Could it be bad gas? Should I try draining it or putting sea foam through it?

Just put sea foam into it. I'll give an update tomorrow.

    I'd drain the gas first.

Low rpm problems is normally jets in the carb getting gummed up.

Higher RPM's usually relates to bad fuel or fuel delivery.

High RPM could be bouncing off Rev Limit.

It's never done it before. I've topped it out at 59 mph and it's never bounced off the rev limit. I would say I'm going around 50 when it happens. It's hard to tell because the speedometer just quit working recently.

No. It's a 2003 Suzuki eiger 400 4x4 manual and it's carbureted. Just to be more specific.

Okay thanks. I'll keep that in mind for the future. I don't know much about engines or stuff like that so this would be useful.

Have you ever had the plug changed in it? If the fuel treatment doesn't fix the problem, put a new spark plug in it and try that. They're cheap and easy to change. Also clean the air filter while you're working on it. It's probably the gas though.

Sounds like it's starving for fuel. Have you changed the fuel filter?

    Good luck

May be getting hot and vapor locking the fuel system. Check for heat sources on or near the supply line.

This could occur as the engine warms and fuel is marginal at lower speeds/loads. Once you jump to 5th, demand could in theory outstrip supply and starve the engine.

Check the air intake under the seat, if I remember right there is a flap to prevent water from getting in. If that sticks you suffocate the engine. Will run fine until you need more air than can pass through.

Does it have a spark arrester? If so insure it isn't plugged. Had that happen to me once while on a hunt in NM. Drove me crazy trying to find the problem.

Checked the plug yesterday. It was half black and half brown. I wanted to check the filter yesterday but couldn't find the right screw driver. I'll do that later.

To be honest I don't know where the filter is. I checked everywhere and can't find it. On that model if you look for oem parts they don't have a fuel filter on the list.

I wanted to take it out because it is extremely dirty but they have a super tight fit. They tell you you're supposed to clean it in the owners manual but it's nearly impossible to get it out. I read one guy bent the exhaust tip and tied a rope to the spark arrestor and a tree then just put it in 1st gear to pull the thing out.

Filter could be inline with the fuel line.

The air filter was completely covered with sand. Good thing it was oiled.

Take the tank off and drain the gas, check the tank for any foreign objects. Change the spark plug. If you have a fuel filter it would be an inline filter between the gas tank and carb, change replace with a new one. Take the air filter out and clean it and make sure the air filter box is clean also. With all of that done get some fuel treatment, should run good after that.

Cleaned the filter and again no improvement. On to next step tomorrow- look for invisible fuel filter and possibly change spark plug.
