What's everyone using these days? My Under Armour has seen its better day and I'm looking to upgrade. I've been looking at the Cabela's Thermal Zone Standhunter, which has great reviews but is a little pricey. I'm not stingy but if there's something out there better for less money i'd rather go that route!

Under armour 4.0 is the thickest we carry at work. The black / lime green accents one that has scent control is super thick too. I personally have been wearing first lite and just got some sitka ones this month I like em. But the thickest I've seen is UA

Merino wool such as Kuiu, First Lite, Icebreaker, Core4Element, Minus 33 are going to be the warmest and are much, much better than synthetic base layers

x2 for merino wool, it is the best there is. Any brand will do.

Best is only relevant to the activity your using it for. If you hunting on the go, still hunting or spot and stalk then I would chose merino wool base layers in light and mid weight.

If you primarily treestand hunter then i would also add micro grid Synthetics to the mix, like cabelas ECWCS ....

i'm anxious to see what others say. The past 3 years i've been wearing the Coldgear 3.0 and it works good but I think i want a warmer top for those days that its 20 or colder. Is there much difference between the 3.0 and 4.0 do you think? I know just a little thicker but I wonder really how much difference it could be. Seems to be more of a selling scheme to me.

The "warmest" base layer, is actually dependent on what and how much activity you will be involved in.

Strictly speaking of warmth while stationary the grid fleece to me is warmer than merino base layers.

However, these will get you sweating quickly if you are walking any distance in them. So depending on your situation they may or may not be a fit for what you are trying to have the base layers accomplish.

I have a set of ecwcs, I can't stand the constriction of under armour.

I don't use the warmest, I adjust my over layer. If it gets cold enough I break out my camo bibs that I use for Rifle hunting.

I also bought the new Sitka core heavy weight. Like it, way more loft to it than the Traverse line had. Will be a solid performer.

I have sets of mid weight Merino (1/4 zip for the top), Cabela's ECWCS polar weight (1/4 zip for the top), and Under Armour 2.0 or 3.0 I can't remember (mock t-neck for the top). I actually think the UA/ECWCS combo is warmer than the merino/ECWCS combo when treestand sitting. Maybe it is just the brand of merino I have but after everything I read I expected it to be much warmer than the UA, but that has not been the case for me.

After spending years in UA cold gear, I switched to Minus 33 last fall and it is far and away more affective and warmer than UA. In my opinion, UA is overpriced and junk compared to high quality natural fibers like wool. I went with the heaviest weight they have and it wicks well and kept me very warm last fall, even in single digits we saw while hunting in Mo.

I have had merino bases and pieces from Sitka, Kuiu, First Lite, Ibex, Minus33 and Icebreaker. But so far the nicest and warmest heavy weight merino wool bases I have found has been made by ULLFROTTÉ.....https://www.woolpower.se/en/
