Was talking with a friend today and these umbrellas came up. We all know even in a gore-tex shell it is not enjoyable to sit in the rain. He thinks the deer will ignore them, I think the opposite. I have thought about these treestand umbrellas off and on over the years (usually when I am sitting in the rain). Seems they would be nice to keep most of the rain off of you... But, I just cannot get past the silhouette that they must create when looking up at them from the ground. Have you ever had encounters with older bucks while using these umbrellas and how did they react? (bow season only experiences please) What experiences overall have you had with other deer?
Only experience I've had is...I bought one and its still sitting in my basement in the box, because I'm scared to use it.
I used one for the 1st time last year. Had a beautiful 150 inch 8 pointer that I'm guessing was 4-5 years old come to within 12 yards of the stand. Never paid any attention to the umbrella. I was sitting in a pine tree with plenty of pine boughs for cover though. Never had a good clean shot at that deer but I badly wanted to put an arrow in him. Just my experience.
I've used them in the past for rain and even light snow. I honestly liked mine. It seemed to keep about 99% of the water off. It's a little disadvantage when bow hunting because you need to put it high enough to stand under it. As far as spooking deer, I've never had any problems with that part of it.
The only experience I have with them is making fun of Justin for using one. I'd rather sit in the rain for a couple hours then have the Chinese torture of listening to the rain hit that thing and the big hemorrhoid in the tree.
I just put on a camo rain jacket. Legs get a bit wet still but we are hunters right? This is water we are talking about.
Dark to dark in 35-50 degree temps in the rain? I wear Gore-tex head to toe other than my face and hands on rainy days, when you sit all day in those conditions it is not all that enjoyable. Halloween 2006 after an all day sit in the rain I arrowed a nice public land buck with literally like 10 minutes of light to spare. I have also had some real nice other encounters during the rain and and taken other big bucks in the time leading up to and after the rain stops. I sit all day on these days if I can. Looking for a way to be more comfortable. Just not sold at all on this idea.
Never used one while bowhunting. Have used them a lot in a season not to be named in this thread. I think if your in a tree with the normal cover required for bowhunting it might be fairly hard to find the room to install one of them. If depends though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I use one all the time and killed my last buck under one it literally doesn't bother them at all sounds like rain hitting leaves.. Bothers me more then them.
I love mine. I don't go to the stand with out it. I am looking into buying Hawks new Umbrella its pretty amazing. http://hawkhunting.myshopify.com/products/wingspan-ultimate-umbrella HERE IS THE TRUE QUESTION? Why are they not camo on the underside that the deer/human looks up and see's
$27, free shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HAWK-3005-Wingspan-Ultimate-Tree-Umbrella-/361337751186?hash=item5421688692
Dang it, I just bought one of those damn things... For $27, I thought I would pick it up after I watched their video and saw how fast and simple theirs is. Would be nothing to put up when the heavy rain comes and take down after it passes. Looks like a minute or less. If it makes one hunt better, it'll be worth it. Thanks for the link.
I have used one and the deer really don't take note of it. I thought the sound would bother them, but I guess it sounds like rain hitting the leaves.
i have this umbrella. Its small an effective enough to keep me dry when needed. I keep it in my backpack just in case the sky falls out while im in the stand. http://www.basspro.com/Big-Game-Treestands-PopUp-Umbrella/product/12031505005322/
Well dark to dark in a hard cold rain wouldn't be enjoyable but that's when you go take a break to warm up in the cabin with some hot coffee and a bowl of venison chili . For the light rain days, sure, have a good base layer, throw on a camo rain jacket and stick it out.
