Looking to get a kayak to do some fishing. Mostly lakes, streams/light rivers, and calm bays or sounds. I know I'd rather have a sit on top model. Preferably something over 10 feet. So far everything I look at under 300 either gets water into the hull, tracks poorly, or is unstable. So I'll extend my price range to 400 not including a paddle. Is it too much to ask for a sit top kayak, that's stable and tracks well for that price? Any brand suggestions are appreciated. Rod holders aren't a must but definitely something I would like. Yeah I'm aware that water will come in through the scupper holes. But some models water would actually get INSIDE the hull through rod holders, where cup holders were screwed in, etc. and thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
for that price, watch CL for used kayaks. and define stable? If you want to stand, you are not going to get anything at that price. Most of the cheap ones are really stable if you just sit, but they are not comfortable at all the best kayak for the price is the Ascend FS12T at BPS. At $550, its a great deal

I'll second the Ascend FS12 being the best at that price point. Fishing kayaks are built more for stability, than tracking. But the track is more dependent on your paddling, further out you have your paddle, the more side to side your track will be. My biggest issue when I was buying was looking at weight capacity the FS is very good at about 350lbs. 1 1/2" PVC fits into the two rod holders, with a little DIY ingenuity you can make a set of outriggers to aid in stability.

the seat is very, very important if you want to fish comfortably I would not buy a fishing kayak with a molded seat

I fished for many years in an old, crappy Pelican with a molded seat bottom (I added a cushion) and a padded back and once I bought my Native Ultimate with a legit chair, I'll never go back to the crappy chairs. I can last maybe and hour or 2 in the Pelican before I have to get up. I can sit all day in my Native.
Natives are the ****, worth every penny. second the modeled seats, they all suck....at the very least if you go that route make sure you can install an aftermarket seat to it at a later time....
I'd have more to spend if I got a cheap paddle but I hear that a good paddle can make all the difference. So I'm budgeting a least 100-150 for a good paddle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ascends are good kayaks and everyone I know likes them. I bought my native ultimate lightly used for $450. They book around $1,200 +/-. Its been an awesome boat.
