So there was a news article on my facebook about some state troopers shooting and killing a dog (after three shots) that was hit by a car. I made a comment about how sad it was to shoot it not only once but three times. Making the dog suffer way more than it should have. I got this comment back... "And if you ever hunted, you'd know an animal never goes down with one round. Also animals that get shot in the brain will run even with 4 broken legs. The adrenaline causes them to overcome initial pain until they die." I kindly replied telling him he must not be hunting correctly if he can't kill with one shot. But wait...maybe I am the bad hunter because I can kill with one correctly placed shot?!!
Yeah...and of course I'm the liar because a buck will never drop with a bow or rifle, they run. Sheesh. I just got to admit that I am not good at it.
It really wouldn't bother me if the person wasn't arguing with me like I've never spent a day in the woods. Not saying I'm the next Eva Shockey, but I have shot a thing or two.
To that I say its better to be thought of as a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. Who ever wrote that statement is certainly a fool.
So adrenaline even causes broken bones to function? Neato. Was the dog still somewhat mobile? Was it shot with ball ammo out of a handgun, center of mass? Cops generally don't know anatomy any better than the average non-hunter. Ideally a dog or any other animal that wasn't running or flopping about would be put down with a single brain shot. But some aim for the chest-ish area. It's possible that the officer mistook death throes for life and shot repeatedly or just shot multiple times to be on the safe side. Or maybe it was just really bad marksmanship. I once went to pick up a roadkilled fawn. It needed to be put down so the officer at the scene shot it in the head. With buckshot. Twice. It had only one ear and a bit of lower lip remaining. The rest of it's head was splattered about in small chunks in the snow behind the body. When I asked the cop why the second shot, when most of it's head was removed at the first shot... he just grinned and said... "why not?" LOL
Christine, here's the article... http://www.yourerie.com/news/news-a...ice-in-meadville/21990/FcqO4Z0-fEK33lzQDaXhHA
When I was younger I was getting off work around eleven and this really nice eight pointer ran through the parking lot and jumped the fence by the freeway and broke both of it's front legs on the other side when it landed. It limped to the other side of the freeway and laid in the ditch. It was a shame to see a nice healthy animal have some stupid bad luck. Anyway we called the police and the sheriff showed up. Instead of using his pistol to put the buck down he used buckshot just like what Christine described. He shot it 3 times in the head. I thought at the time, what a moron. Why is he using a shotgun instead of his pistol? But it seems like it's more common for cops to do that than I thought.
