Are you guys NH residents? Buddy of mine bought some property and a house up North there in Lancaster...from what I gather when talking to him he thinks it'll be "easy" to draw a moose tag. I find that hard to believe no matter if your a resident or not. Good luck guys, hope you draw!
Good luck! I shot a bull back in 2000 in NH with a muzzleloader, as far as I know its still #1 in that category.. The NH moose herd is taking a beating, as is Maine's herd too.
Yeah it is...... big problems with winter tick kill and brain worm. Sad story the fish and game find moose with thousands of ticks attached. Poor things
My buddy has just drawn Maine, second time in ten years as non resident. He drew VT about 5 years back.....he is waiting on NH to finish out a NE moose slam. I think he is the top 5 for points in NH as a NR, he told me this was his 24th year applying. I gave up on all NR New England draws, the money, effort and lack of planning didn't make it worth it....since then it's been Canada and I haven't looked back.
It depends on the number of chances you purchase in the drawing, could be as cheap as 25 or as high as 100 I think... The tag is about 600 if you draw. My buddy drew zone 7, which is about as good a unit as you can hope in Maine. He be nuts if he doesn't hold out for 55 plus
That's pretty awesome Jimmy! I remember you and I talking about all this stuff some time back also when I was considering putting in for NH as well. I hope your buddy gets it, would make all the hassle and annoyance of it all worth it to get that slam!
He is on egg shells, he wants to draw NH however it's going to make getting both hunts in hard scheduling wise for him. I told him to just make it happen ... I think he may have only a couple non residents above him in NH so he is knocking on the door
Thats a tough call there... I bear hunt the border of zone 7 and 12, while 7 is a very good zone, I wouldn't be passing up a 50" bull on Monday thats for sure. Especially being the October week which is past the rut. Our moose herd isn't doing very well either. There are plenty of good bulls around still, but he better be prepared to work for them! Does he have an idea on the area he is going to be hunting in yet?
Yes he knows where he is hunting. He killed a 52 there last time he hunted and he has a local contact that is helping him out. I am sure he won't be too quick to kill one unless he draws NH ...then I could see him wanting to tag a bull quick to go over the boarder and start scouting. They have a bunch of sheds from this spring and seem to have a handle on some decent Bulls. I was in the area last fall, the very eastern part of 7 along the NH boarder and I thought numbers were down a bit. Seen a few good Bulls but over all less moose. This tag was a app a 1 in 350 draw for him, he lucked out big time. NH will be a 1 in 80 draw with less than a handful of NR above him. Interested to see how it plays out or if he misses it.
Well my buddy didnt draw....below is his message to me. Nope....actually happy....they cut back even more.....105 tags...only 6 non resudents....my odds were 1 in 114....still have VT to be picked in mid July......
Having a local guy is key!!! They are around thats for sure, and as long as he is willing to work for a good one which it sounds like he is, I'm sure he'll wrap his tag on one!
Sorry that you didn't get the draw. I have been trying to draw an elk tag in my home state for over 10 years with not luck so I feel your pain.
